Australian Research Council
Sydney researchers have been awarded over $53.9 million by the Australian Research Centre (ARC) for research projects commencing in 2009 - the largest amount awarded to any university in Australia. This includes $45.8 million for 124 ARC Discovery Grants and $8.1 million for 19 ARC Linkage Grants.
Discovery Program Funding
The University will host 124 new Discovery Projects valued at $45.8 million from 2009-2013.
This funding includes salaries for 9 Professorial Research Fellows, four mid-career Research Fellows, and 17 Postdoctoral Research Fellows.
In 2008 the University of Sydney has 19 Federation Fellowships, making it the most successful university in the country. The announcement of the Laureate Fellows, the new scheme superseding the Federation Fellows, starting in 2009 will be made shortly.
The Federal Government awards Federation/Laureate Fellowships to expatriate Australians who are returning to Australia from leading positions at prestigious international organizations, as well as researchers currently residing in Australia who have demonstrated excellence and conducted outstanding ground-breaking research.
Linkage Program Funding
ARC awarded $8.1 million to the University of Sydney for research collaborations starting in 2009 in the latest round of linkage grants. Collaborating partners will contribute another $3 million in cash and $7 million “in-kind” to these projects.
Linkage Program Funding is an industry-linked scheme in which the ARC matches the cash and in-kind contribution provided by industry partners.
Centres of Excellence
The University of Sydney is home to two ARC Centres of Excellence – Autonomous Systems, and Ultrahigh Bandwidth Devices for Optical Systems. ARC Centres of Excellence are funded on the basis of research excellence and their potential to contribute to the economic, social and cultural development of Australia.
