Specific Background Scholarships
For undergraduate students from low socio-economic backgrounds, particularly Indigenous students and students from rural and regional areas. Applicants in postgraduate degrees in National Priority areas are also eligible to apply. The relevant degrees at the University of Sydney are the Master of Teaching and Master of Nursing degrees only.
There are three types of Commonwealth Scholarships:
1. Commonwealth Education Costs Scholarships (CECS), which help with general education costs ($2,207* in 2009), and
2. Commonwealth Accommodation Scholarships (CAS) to help students from rural and remote areas with accommodation costs ($4,415* in 2009).
3. Commonwealth Indigenous Access Scholarships (IAS) to help Indigenous students with educational costs ($4,166* in 2009)

Honours Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit and personal attributes such as leadership and creativity.
To receive one of these scholarships, students must be local students (ie. Australian or New Zealand citizens, or permanent residents of Australia) and be commencing a University of Sydney Honours programme in 2009. In order to be eligible, the programme you are studying must have an additional year following the standard length Bachelor degree. Please check with the relevant Faculty if you are unsure whether your course of study is considered to have an additional Honours year. Some Honours degrees do not include an additional year of study and are therefore not eligible for this scholarship.
Please note that, applications are open once a year only, irrespective of whether you intend to commence in the first or second semester, so if you wish to apply, please ensure you do so by the closing date above.

The 2008 Governor General’s Undergraduate Essay Competition gives university-level students from all faculties the chance to be further rewarded for their academic skill and talent, while also improving their future academic reference.
Every year, the competition is judged by a panel of highly recognized individuals from High Court justices to academics. The final judging panel for this year will include the Hon Justice Michael Kirby AC CMG of the High Court of Australia.
The 2008 questions offer a wide variety of topics current in constitutional and political debate. All relate to the best way forward for the Australian democracy. Each essay contributed will be judged on its individual merit.

Graduate Entry Program Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit and personal attributes such as leadership and creativity for students enrolling in their first year of Graduate Law, Bachelor of Dentistry, University of Sydney Medical Program (USydMP) or Teaching Degree.
To be eligible for these scholarships, students must be local students (ie. Australian or New Zealand citizens, or permanent residents of Australia). Scholarships are awarded for study in a specified degree program/Faculty and cannot be transferred.

AFUW NSW is affiliated with AFUW Inc which is one of 78 member nations of the International Federation of University Women (IFUW) which has consultative status with the United Nations and its specialised agencies, including UNESCO and ECOSOC. AFUW thus has a direct voice through IFUW on international matters of critical importance to the protection of human rights and the status of women and girls.
The Australian Federation of University Women – NSW Inc. offers several annual awards to outstanding women students completing their first undergraduate degree course in 2008 and proceeding to approved further study. Preference will be given to applicants with significant community involvement. Applicants must be Australian citizens or permanent residents.

The Trustees of The Australian Federation of University Women - South Australia Inc. (AFUW-SA Inc.) Trust Fund have the pleasure in offering the following bursaries for tenure in 2009-10. Money for these bursaries is raised by their Academic Dress Hire Service, which is staffed on a voluntary basis by members of The AFUW-SA Inc. and friends.
2009 JEAN GILMORE BURSARY (Postgraduate Research)
Value: up to $6,000
For women who are undertaking postgraduate degrees (Masters or doctorates) by research at an Australian university. Applicants must have completed one year of post-grad research, must not be in full-time paid employment or on fully-paid study leave, and must not have won a bursary in this category in 2008. A lodgement fee of $12.00AUD is required.

Value: up to $4,000
For women who are undertaking postgraduate degrees (Masters or doctorates) by coursework at an Australian university. Applicants must not be in full-time paid employment or on fully-paid study leave, and must not have won a bursary in this category in 2008.

The Trustees of the Education Trust of the Australian Federation of University Women -NSW Inc. invite applications for the AFUW-NSW TEMPE MANN TRAVELLING SCHOLARSHIP 2009. To be eligible, women students must hold a research masters or degree from, or be enrolled as a masters or doctorate degree student at, The University of Sydney. The Scholarship is awarded to a woman to undertake a short period of advanced research or course work in any field, at an overseas university or equivalent organisation.
