The US in the World

This undergraduate unit of study introduces students to the key global transformations of the contemporary era, focusing on the role of the United States amid the challenges posed by globalisation, the rise of Islamic extremism, nuclear proliferation and the emergence of China and India as world powers.

Students will develop their ability to look behind today’s news headlines to understand the underlying forces driving them, particularly the behaviours and views of key policy makers and opinion leaders.

USSC2601 will be taught in Semester 1 2009, by Professor Geoff Garrett, Chief Executive Officer of the United States Studies Centre.

Professor Garrett will share with students his research on the interaction between globalisation and the war on terrorism as the two dominant forces shaping contemporary America. Students will be encouraged to engage actively in the interrogation and further development of this research.

This unit of study can be completed as part of a major in either American Studies or Government & International Relations.
