Senior leadership recruitment

A global search to fill senior leadership roles at Australia's first university

These two roles in our Senior Executive Group are responsible for the strategic direction and delivery of our core academic objectives and educational enterprise respectively.

The University of Sydney has embarked upon a global search for our next

  • Provost and Deputy Vice-Chancellor
  • Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education)

The University of Sydney is one of Australia’s strongest and most recognised institutions and is ranked among the world’s leading universities.

Since our inception nearly 170 years ago, the University has been a leader in improving the world around us, and this drive for innovation and impact continues to be a hallmark of the University’s vision for the future.

The arrival of a dynamic new Vice-Chancellor provides an opportunity to build upon an already strong framework, and represents the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the institution.

Sydney is ranked among the top universities in the world (60th in the THE World University Rankings 2020), excelling for the quality of its teaching and research, graduate employability, breadth of subjects, student mobility, and generosity of scholarships.

    Provost and Deputy Vice-Chancellor role

With the impending retirement of the Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and former Provost Professor Stephen Garton AM, the incoming Provost and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Provost) will play a pivotal role in support of the Vice-Chancellor and in the broader context of the University’s senior leadership.

As a member of the Senior Executive Group the Provost pro-actively contributes to the strategic planning, resourcing and vision-setting for the University and is responsible for the strategic leadership and operational delivery of our academic objectives, ensuring continuous improvement in performance to the highest standards of excellence.

The Provost will ensure a focus on outstanding academic performance and scholarship, strategic planning and sound financial management across the Faculties, University Schools, Centres and other units including the University Libraries, Academic Board and Academic Excellence. The role is responsible for ensuring a high-performance culture across the institution to enable research, education, community engagement and innovation to flourish.

This is a unique opportunity for an outstanding and experienced senior academic leader. We are looking for someone who shares our vision and values; an inspirational and collaborative leader who is adept at navigating through complexity and can deliver against an ambitious agenda for the future.

    Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) role

With the retirement of Professor Philippa Pattison AO at the end of this year after a long and distinguished career, the University of Sydney’s Education portfolio will require an inspiring and experienced leader to continue its journey of innovation with a focus on impact and agility in order to address the challenges of the future.

The DVC (Education) oversees our whole-of-University Education Portfolio, the hallmarks of which are a deep commitment to continued innovation in teaching and learning and providing our students with an optimal University experience.

The last five years have seen significant innovation across the undergraduate curriculum, including a closer alignment with the University’s enterprise and engagement agenda.

This reform is the result of significant collaboration and a commitment to the development of a values-based culture across the institution. Responsible for strategy, vision, and implementation of policy and initiatives pertaining to both teaching and learning and the student experience, the DVC (Education) also plays a key role in the executive leadership of the university and its strategic direction for the future.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced academic leader to build upon an innovative education portfolio. The successful candidate will demonstrate clear alignment with the vision for education and the values of the institution, along with an understanding and appreciation of excellence in an education context, and the challenges facing the sector in the delivery of education outcomes and a world-class student experience.
