Masonic Symbols Masonic Symbols Still life showing architectural masonic symbols and including skull, hour glass, cabinet, book,spectacles, & candlestick. It is likely that Smith brought this example with him when he came to Australia in 1852. Possession of an image such as this may have been common in the days when membership to masonic groups was a form of solidarty in a new land. Professor Archibald Liverside, appointed to the Chair of Chemisty in 1874, held an identical daguerreotype among his collection. The photographer was London-based, who established his business about 1850. 809_001 c.1852
