Associate Professor Mark Melatos
Mark Melatos is Associate Professor of Economics at the University of Sydney, where he completed his PhD in 2002. He has previously been Associate Dean (Postgraduate Coursework) and Sub-Dean (Academic Appeals and Progression) in the university’s Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. He is currently Degree Director of the Faculty’s Executive Master of Arts and Social Sciences.
Mark’s research, focusing on international trade theory and policy, is published in influential journals such as the European Economic Review and The World Economy. Mark has consulted for the OECD’s Trade and Agriculture Directorate on several projects including measuring the impacts of regional trade agreements and non-tariff barriers. He has also been invited to advise Australian Government inquiries into matters related to international trade and investment.
Mark has held visiting positions at numerous international organisations and universities abroad including at theOECD,Copenhagen Business School,York University,University of Copenhagenas well as at universities in the UK, France, Germany, Italy and Switzerland. He has presented numerous invited research seminars at institutions such as theWorld Trade Organization,OECD,London School of EconomicsandIowa State University. In support of his research, he has received numerous competitive research grants including from the Australian Research Council, Danish Research Council and European Commission.
Mark has extensive experience teaching economics. He is often approached by Australian and international education providers to advise on the design and assessment of secondary and tertiary-level economics and business curricula. From 2008 to 2019 Mark was Chief Examiner for the NSW Higher School Certificate (HSC) economics examination.
Mark is currently a member of the NSW Education Standards Authority’s HSC Standards Committee and serves on the Reserve Bank of Australia’s Educators Advisory Panel.
