Visiting research fellowship scheme

Offered by the School of Literature, Art and Media
This scheme enables international scholars and interstate Australian scholars of high international standing to undertake research for periods of normally no less than a fortnight and no more than six months in a well-supported and engaged research environment.

Up to ten SLAM Visiting Research Fellowships will be awarded, to be taken up in 2022 or early 2023. There will be up to $5,000 available for each Fellowship to contribute to airfare and accommodation expenses for the Fellow’s time in Sydney. Fellows are provided with office space, computer facilities and library borrowing privileges, as well as access to research libraries and University facilities and events.

Fellows are expected to participate in the research cultures of the School and the Faculty through such activities as attending relevant research seminars, presenting work-in-progress and leading graduate masterclasses. The School is committed to diversity and inclusivity, and we welcome applications from people of all backgrounds. We particularly encourage visits from early career scholars (within the first 5 years after the award of their PhD) and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander scholars.

The Visiting Research Fellowship Scheme is competitively awarded with two application rounds a year in March and August.

Selection criteria include:

  • The scholarly merits of the proposed research;
  • The research standing of the applicant;
  • The strategic fit between the proposed research and current research activities or interests in the School.

For the complete list of selection criteria, please read the 2022 Visiting Research Fellowship Guidelines.

Applicants must be able to demonstrate the relevance of their proposed research to current research activities or interests in the School. To this end, applicants must secure the active support of one or more colleagues in the School of Literature, Art and Media, who will stand as sponsors for the application. Once your application has been received, this sponsor will provide a statement of support.

Applicants must have at least a higher degree or equivalent professional experience, research and publications. International applicants are strongly encouraged. Proficiency in both written and spoken English is expected of all Fellows.

Each Fellowship will provide up to $5,000 dependent on city of origin and length of stay.

Successful Fellows should note that a visa is required to enter Australia on any non-Australian passport. The immigration area in the University HR Department can advise in relation to obtaining the appropriate visa. Responsibility for securing the correct visa, however, is the responsibility of the Fellow.

Visa information for entry into Australia can be found on the Department of Home Affairs website.

Applications for Fellowships close on Monday 31 March 2022 and 31 August 2022.
