BIS is a crucial enabler of innovation and operational efficiency for organisations in an information age, so I wanted to gain a fundamental understanding of BIS and its application in developing strategic and practical solutions for business problems.

Working in a team-based learning environment equipped me with better communication and leadership skills. The course promoted an understanding of not just the technical knowledge of BIS but its practical application in business.

The soft skills and technical knowledge I’ve developed from BIS will help me make better innovative and practical decisions at work.

In this information age, it is important to equip ourselves with the latest skills such as big data, analytics visualisation and information management, which is just what BIS is about.

Apart from learning different software like Signavio, Tableau and SAP, BIS helped me in building my teamwork and leadership from group projects. Most of the projects are based on a case study that allows us to generate in-depth understandings of complex issue in real-life context.

BIS provides a complete overview of the business operation and develops innovative strategies to further improve the business’ process.

I was really drawn to Business Information Systems due to the applicability in modern day workplaces and schools of thought. I have come to gain a deeper understanding of the way businesses operate and ought to operate in order to keep up with the rapid changes in technology we are seeing today. I saw the link between this and Marketing, my other major as a means to gain a deeper insight into problem-solving and critical thinking.

Business Information Systems has provided me with a way of thinking that is unparalleled with that of other disciplines. I am able to better visualise business problems, provide solutions and have confidence in those solutions primarily through my understanding of data.

Equal First Place in Accounting Information Systems, S2 2018

One of the best aspects of my BIS course was that it involved a practical element, in which we got to work with the enterprise management system SAP. This gave me the ability to see how business information systems can work in practice and gain relevant practical skills, which is important considering that many companies still use SAP.

By studying BIS one gains an in-depth understanding of how information flows in business and learns tools that enable the evaluation of business operations.

The highlight of BIS my studies was practical thinking about the nature and impact of each IT application in business. I appreciated Business Process Mapping and risk control practice which provided hands-on experience to understand the whole picture of an organization and how IT function interacts with our practice.

Studying BIS offers new perspectives and skills that expand the scope of my business knowledge as well as my career choice. It particularly sheds light on hot topics among professionals and bridges the gap between what I have learned in class and what applied in the business world.

First Place in Project Management, S2 2018

After having the experience of being an assistant counsellor in my undergraduate study and getting involved in several projects, I realized the complicacy of launching projects and wanted to know more about the method of better managing a project. The lesson of Project Management of BIS introduces the elements, important principles and latest trend of project management to students without requiring basic professional knowledge, so it was a great choice for me to start learning project management systematically.

The most impressive character is the combination of theory and cases. Many cases are selected from real life events happening around us, which opens a window for us to evaluate some large-scale projects with the knowledge we have learnt. Thus, our capability of understanding and using theory is enhanced, and our interest in project management is stimulated.

First Place in Digital Business Foundations, S2 2018

The Digital Business Foundations course challenged me to create a business in the dynamic field – and one that is foreign to me – of smart farm technology. The level of detail required from the project planning stage to the design of the business information system surpassed any project that I have been involved with. Although rigorous, the assignment was rewarding and excellent practice for future real-world projects.

Unlike other programs, BIS courses offer practical information that is more applicable to real work situations. Beyond the theories and knowledge taught in the classrooms, there are valuable insights and experiences to be gained from the assignments and group projects. In future work situations, I will be able to draw upon these practices and implement them.

The highlight of my BIS studies was learning how to think critically of the relationship among IT/IS, organisations and individuals. BIS is an interdisciplinary field and there are a variety of critical issues to discuss. The faculty is quite supportive and inspiring; they encouraged me to ask questions and to be confident of having a different viewpoint.

Studying BIS enabled me to explain the business value of IT/IS and understand technical aspects, which would help me cooperate with IT experts as a business analyst or digital consultant. Furthermore, the breadth of BIS courses can help me find the area I am interested in since I may pursue a research degree in the future.

As the development of technology and digital innovations increased rapidly, so did my craving and desire to upskill and further improve myself. I wanted to keep up to date with the latest technologies and software and to further develop my technical knowledge and skillset. Coming from a Marketing background, I knew that BIS will greatly help and advance me in my future career and life.

The highlight of my BIS studies includes learning to use new software to help with various aspects of BIS, including Tableau for business intelligence and data visualization, Python for statistical learning and data mining, SAP for enterprise systems management, and Signavio to model business processes. These were extremely beneficial and contributed greatly towards my understanding of the various aspects of information systems in business and how to apply them in the real world.

Each unit of BIS has something unique to offer. Some helped me gain technical knowledge on tools like SAP, Signavio and Tableau whereas some helped me understand and learn critical thinking and analysis, communication skills, teamwork and business report writing. Moreover, now I am well equipped with the latest industry trends and have got a blend of business and technical know-how that will help in driving my future organization towards success. Studying BIS and at The University of Sydney has made me confident to face all challenges that will come my way professionally as well as personally.

Tully Holleley
First Place in Data Visualisation, S2 2018

Learning about various aspects of BIS and applying the learning in meaningful scenarios that are relevant to business, was the highlight for me. Being able to learn how to apply Agile project management methodology, how to cleanse, transform and manage extracted data, and understand how to ultimately present data in a way that’s meaningful to the audience, in particular through visualisation using tools like Tableau, were stand out learning experiences for me.

BIS courses have provided me with the knowledge and skills to effectively participate in an IS project team. It has also provided me with a solid foundation in data management and visualisation for organisational management and decision making. BIS courses require critical thinking, and being able to explore and develop that over the course of BIS subjects has been both challenging and rewarding.
