Update 11 August 3:00 PM

The Password Skills Test is no longer offered by the University of Sydney Centre for English Teaching since language testing centres have now re-opened in China. For details of test centre locations in China, please go to https://www.ielts.org/book-a-test/find-a-test-location/location-list/china/tv .

Update 22 July 1:00 PM

Are you an international student located in China or Iran who has a current conditional degree offer to The University of Sydney where the condition is English?

With many language testing centres currently closed in your country due to the pandemic, we can now offer - on temporary basis - an online alternative to IELTS: the Password Skills test.

The Password can be taken to meet the English Language Proficiency condition for a degree at the University of Sydney which commences in either Semester 2, 2020 or Semester 1, 2021.

The test can be taken at home on your own personal computer. The total cost to complete the test through CET and the University of Sydney is AUD$245.

For more information, and to register for the Password test, please go to https://www.sydney.edu.au/cet/test-centre/password-test.html

The format of the test includes four test modules – reading, writing, listening and speaking, and is run in two parts with a short break in between. The first part assesses reading and writing and takes 1 hour 45 minutes. The second part assesses listening and speaking and takes 1 hour 20 minutes. Learn more about the Password Skills test by visiting here.

Update 22 June 3:00 PM

If English language testing centres are not open in your country

Students are required to take an English test prior to admission to the Direct Entry Course at the Centre for English Teaching.

Authorised English Tests include:

  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language: internet-based (TOEFL iBT)
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic
  • Cambridge English C1 Advanced (formerly CAE) and Cambridge English C2 Proficiency (formerly CPE)

The following temporary arrangements have been made for students who are applying for the CET Direct Entry Course from a country where English language testing centres are not open:

  • We will extend the current English language test validity to 3 years.
  • We will accept the IELTS Indicator from countries where standard testing procedures are not currently available.
  • We will accept TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition from countries where standard testing procedures are not currently available.

Once authorised English tests become available, these temporary arrangements will no longer be accepted.

Please note: The University acceptance of these test is not related to any visa requirement. It is the students’ responsibility to check Home Affairs website for all visa related information.
