Overview

The next breakthroughs in personalised medicine and genetic therapies will require a workforce with the skills to understand and use a range of genetic techniques and technologies, to interpret complex data sets, and to translate diagnostic, scientific and laboratory findings into clinical practice.

The Master of Biomedical Science (Genomics and Precision Medicine) is designed to meet the rapidly growing demand in biomedical science for graduates who are skilled in state-of-the-art omic techniques and who are well-versed in the language of genetics.

Who should study this course?

The Master of Biomedical Science (Genomics and Precision Medicine) is suitable for recent science and health graduates as well as established scientists or clinicians who want to advance their careers in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of genetic diseases. This degree will allow you to hone and expand your skills and knowledge in the genomic sciences in a range of careers and settings including genomics diagnostics, research and genetic therapies.

What you'll study

In the Master of Biomedical Science (Genomics and Precision Medicine) you’ll study 48 credit points of subjects, including two 6 credit point core units in Clinical Laboratory Science and Genomics, Omics and Medical Applications.

You will also complete 24 credit points of stream selective units spanning Cancer and Pathogen Genomics, Disease Diagnosis and Treatment, and Genomics in Clinical Practice. Alternatively, complement your studies with an elective before embarking on your 12 credit point capstone which can be a research project or an industry-related project.

In the Master of Biomedical Sciences (Genomics and Precision Medicine) you will undertake a capstone experience in the form of two 6 credit point project units. You have the option of choosing an industry project or a genomics-related research project as your capstone experience, depending on your interests.

Depending on the project, the genomics-related research capstone may take place with an industry partner. The capstone units enable you to bring together concepts, principles and applications in genomics developed across your award course and synthesise this with your prior learning and experience into a workable research protocol or industry project. The capstone tests your ability to integrate and consolidate your learning.

Admission criteria

Admission to the Master of Biomedical Science (Genomics and Precision Medicine) requires:

  • A bachelor’s degree with honours in science, medical or veterinary science, biomedical science, health science or a health-related discipline;
  • Or a bachelor plus a postgraduate degree in a science, medical or veterinary science, biomedical science, health science, or a health-related discipline;
  • Or a pass bachelor degree in a science, medical or veterinary science, biomedical science, health science or a health-related discipline with minimum of 24 months relevant work experience
  • Or completion of embedded Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma.

Future study opportunities

Outstanding graduates who complete the research capstone may be eligible to pursue a higher degree by research in the courses of Doctor of Philosophy or Master of Philosophy in the Faculty of Medicine and Health.

A higher degree by research provides you with the opportunity to prepare a substantial piece of work which represents a significant contribution in a particular field of study and to gain transferable skills in general research methodologies.

Career pathways

Graduates from the Master of Biomedical Sciences (Genomics and Precision Medicine) have an advanced knowledge of genetic medicine, research literature and genomic techniques. They are able to reflect critically and incorporate genomic and precision medicine knowledge and skills into their practice or research; adopting an evidence - based approach in clinical and research laboratories, and in non-clinical settings.
