Overview

Develop the skills and knowledge to successfully face the practical challenges of English language teaching in a second language context. Using the latest research, this program investigates the theoretical basis of issues relating to applied linguistics and sociocultural contexts of education.

The Master of Education (TESOL) will develop your professional expertise and knowledge in the areas of applied linguistics and English language education whether you are, or are aspiring to become, an English language teacher of children, adolescents or adults. Note that this program does not in itself lead to a professional teaching qualification.

Commonwealth Supported Places

Commonwealth Supported Places (CSP) are available for postgraduate study for eligible domestic students. This means that your course fees are subsidised by the Australian Government and you pay a student contribution amount (SCA). CSPs are limited in number and are allocated based on academic merit.

What you'll study

To qualify for the Master of Education (TESOL) you must complete 8 units of study (48 credit points), including:

  • a minimum of 5 units of study (30 credit points) from this specialisation, comprising;
    • a minimum of 4 units of study (24 credit points) of core units; and
    • a minimum of 1 unit of study (6 credit points) of elective units; plus
  • a minimum of 1 unit of study (6 credit points) of capstone units; and
  • a maximum of 2 units of study (12 credit points) of postgraduate Education units which can be chosen from any designation within the Master of Education program.

Completion requirement

Under normal progression, a full-time student completes prescribed units of study to the value of 24 credit points per semester. Part-time students may undertake prescribed units of study up to the value of 12 credit points per semester. Students are required to attend all lectures, tutorials and other activities prescribed for their units of study.

Capstone (compulsory project)

A capstone unit is completed in the final semester of enrolment. It provides an opportunity to integrate ideas and understandings drawn from units of study taken in the course. The capstone is a compulsory requirement and is undertaken by completing a semester-long special project (6 credit points; 6000 words) or a year-long dissertation (12 credit points; 12,000 words).

Students who intend to undertake a higher degree by research (MPhil, PhD, EdD) in future should enrol in the dissertation. Entry requirements apply for this unit of study - consult your Course Coordinator for further details.

Admission requirement

Admission to candidature for the Master of Education (TESOL) requires:

  • a bachelor's degree from the University of Sydney or equivalent qualification and either a postgraduate English language teaching qualification or at least two yearsfull-time English language teaching experience; or
  • a bachelor's degree in English language teaching or equivalent qualification and at least one year's full-time English language teaching experience.

If you do not meet the requirements listed above for direct entry to the Master’s degree, you may be able to enter via a Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma in the same subject area and upgrade to the Master’s after successful completion of the shorter course.

Professional accreditation

Although there is no international accrediting body for TESOL qualifications, this course is internationally recognised for the purpose of teaching English as a second/additional language at all levels in a variety of educational contexts.

The specialisation offers practitioners the opportunity to develop their professional expertise and knowledge in the areas linguistics and language education, and in particular for those aspiring to become English language teachers to children, adolescents or adults.
