About this major

The one-year (full-time) Honours program in Government and International Relations is designed to provide high-achieving students with the opportunity to undertake a substantial piece of self-directed research. The program comprises two advanced-level seminar units of study and an independent research project on an approved topic of the student’s choice, culminating in the submission of a thesis of approximately 20,000 words. The thesis is planned and completed under the supervision of a member of academic staff belonging to the Discipline of Government and International Relations and is expected to make an original contribution to knowledge.

The Honours program enables students to develop superior analytical, critical thinking, and communication skills which prepare them for careers in research, policy, and related areas. It also provides a pathway to higher degree by research (e.g., PhD) studies.

This subject area is available to students who have previously completed a major in International Relations and/or Politics, or the Politics and International Relations stream.
