Mechanical engineering is a broad branch of engineering that involves the design and analysis of physical devices, products and energy utilisation processes. Mechanical engineers work in a broad range of problems ranging from solving the largest challenges in society such as sustainable and clean energy solutions through to working on the smallest scales in nanotechnology devices.

Graduate opportunities

Mechanical engineers design and manufacture devices and systems vital to society including medical devices, advanced materials, autonomous products and space satellites. They create new technologies which impact on all our lives. In terms of employment mechanical engineers work both in established industries such as mining, defence, manufacturing, construction and building services industries as well as in new start-up companies that are producing new physical products to market.
