Redfern Legal Centre Clinic - LAWS5209

The Redfern Legal Centre (RLC) Clinic is an experiential learning opportunity for a limited number of law students to engage in hands-on learning. This unit of study will act as a gateway between theory and practice for students interested in the delivery of legal services to clients attending a specific advice clinic. RLC will expose students to different facets of public-interest lawyering including communication with and interviewing of clients from diverse backgrounds, management of case files, legal research, drafting, advocacy and ethical obligations. At the end of this unit of study, students should have: (a) Developed or enhanced their understanding of systemic access to justice issues in a particular area of law; (b) Identified the personal demands on and professional/ethical obligations of a public interest lawyer engaged in practice; (c) Gained insights into the interpersonal skills necessary to survive and thrive in legal practice; (d) Developed and applied effective communication skills required for the provision of written and oral legal advice, and; (e) Had the opportunity to work both independently and collaboratively to advance public interest objectives.

3000 word research essay (50%), unit participation (20%), reflective journal (30%)

Additional information
Enrolment in this unit of study is by special application. Priority will be given to students in their final year of study.
