Designing for Diversity

This session aims to get everyone thinking and talking about what diversity means and how we can ensure our design leaves no one out. We will take some time to share the successes and barriers you encounter in your roles as Educational Designers when supporting inclusive practices for our diverse student cohorts, and look at how the 2032 Strategy and the Disability and Inclusion Action Plan 2019 - 2024 prioritise Universal Design for Learning (UDL) as a framework for achieving this.

Dan Smith (he/him) works within the Diversity and Inclusion team as Project Manager for the University’s Disability Inclusion Action Plan and has previously worked in the student engagement space in the Business School and FASS. Dan has lived experience of disability; he is passionate about promoting inclusive practices across the University to ensure all colleagues and students can thrive and participate in campus life.

Kade Fenwick (they/them) is a generalist consultant within the Diversity and Inclusion team. Their current focus is on securing the Disability Confident Recruiter Accreditation from Australian Network on Disability as part of the University’s Disability Inclusion Action Plan. Kade is a proud, neurodivergent transgender person; they are passionate about justice and equity in the context of education, health, social mobility and meaningful employment.

Faculty of Engineering: Educational Design Team

Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in the STEM Classroom
In response to student feedback on issues of discrimination and lack of inclusion, Yvette and Peter designed, developed, and delivered a series of modules on Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in the STEM classroom. This pilot program includes an online module with some short videos on What to do and What NOT to do in the classroom, including segments on Racial Discrimination, Gender Identity Discrimination and Sexual Harassment. Module 2 is a face-to-face module with case studies that actively workshop what participants have previously read and watched and draw on their own experiences in the classroom/lab. Yvette will discuss the background of the project as well as the responses and reactions from tutors invited to participate in the pilot program.

Yvette Debergue is an Educational Designer with the Faculty of Engineering. She teaches in the Faculty’s Tutor Development Program and aims to build communities of educators and learners. In her spare time, she teaches Medieval History.

Peter Lok is an educational designer in the Faculty of Engineering. He happens to be an engineer, was an educator in the faculty, and now partners with the educator community to maximise impact on engineering education. Trekkie. Neuroscience nerd. Boardgames! Not a fan of writing about myself in the third person. :)

Helping UoS Coordinators redesign group work assessments with the use of an online survey
Academic education leaders identified concerns with the common assessment designs of group work assessments in the School of Pharmacy and wanted to support staff across the school to redesign these assessments. Education designers worked with academic leaders to develop a model to support redesign by delivering an active workshop followed by bespoke one-on-one support from Education Designers, coordinated using a survey tool. During the workshop, participants were invited to critically reflect on their current designs and what changes they’d like to make by filling in a survey. The use of a survey allowed active participation during the workshop and was a way for EDs to easily organise follow-up support among our team. It also allowed for asynchronous participation, as the slides, recording, and survey links were circulated afterwards. This model for working with academics may help other professional support teams organise similar projects among larger groups of staff.

Nathalie Guesry is an Education Designer who works at the Faculty of Medicine and Health. Over the past year, she has provided support to the School of Medical Sciences and the School of Pharmacy through a range of projects, including organising workshops on the Conversational Framework, the effective use of interactive videos, and group work. Additionally, Nathalie also made a significant contribution to the SOMS Canvas refresh project. She has also worked as a learning designer for a global Edtech company and as a high school teacher specialising in Commerce and Business Studies.

Miela Kolomaznik is an Education Designer in the Faculty of Medicine and Health, focusing on the School of Pharmacy and School of Medical Sciences. Over the past year, her projects have included faculty-wide resources on Turnitin and academic integrity, group work, and facilitating changes in assessment practices. Before this, she was a learning/education designer for UNSW and at the University of Western Australia, where she also worked as a unit coordinator and tutor in the Science Communication program at UWA.
