What is the Sydney Educational Fellowship Program?

In 2018 the University of Sydney became an accredited partner of the Higher Education Academy (HEA), allowing professional and academic staff who are dedicated educators to receive recognition for their work. Achieving Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (HEA, now known as Advance HE). Fellowships comes in four categories: Associate, Fellow, Senior and Principal. There are several benefits to educational fellowship, including being able to join a community of fellows here at the University of Sydney and gain international recognition for your teaching.

Writing for Fellowship

While the HEA Fellowship application is essentially another a ‘teaching case’, the format and requirements of this differ significantly to that of teaching award and promotion applications. The style also differs from standard academic writing. The format and the requirements can be quite particular and, as a result, can often catch people off guard. Writing a successful fellowship application means more than just having the right experience for your level/category of fellowship. A good fellowship application will showcase and explain your experience (often to a mixed disciplinary panel) in a way that makes it abundantly clear how your work meets the criteria.

2018 Writing Workshops

To support people in applying for fellowship, Educational Innovation is running several workshops that will provide all applicants (AFHEA, FHEA, SFHEA and PFHEA) and potential applicants with the guidance necessary to showcase their teaching. Each workshop offers the opportunity to receive guidance and feedback on any writing you have already done. If you have yet to start writing, do not worry as the workshop will also be a chance to receive an overview of process. Educational Innovation can also advise on which category of fellowship to pursue, for those who are uncertain.

The workshop will cover:
  1. Structure and style of the Account of Professional Practice (APP)
  2. Integrating dimensions of the UKPSF into your APP
  3. Reviewing and refining your work through peer and mentor guidance
  4. Assessor expectations
To prepare, you will need to:
