Welcome

Dean of Sydney Nursing School

Welcome to Sydney Nursing School

Sydney Nursing School's vision is to be the premier research-intensive nursing and midwifery school in Australia, respected and highly regarded internationally, and to be the graduate entry and post-registration nursing education provider of choice for high-achieving students.

The focus of our scholarship is to improve health outcomes, the quality of care, and the health-related experience of people at times of vulnerability. The health care landscape is changing quite profoundly, both locally and internationally. This makes the contribution which nurses and midwives make to people's experiences of illness and health care outcomes even more important.

Sydney Nursing School's main academic activities are teaching, research and scholarship. Together with practice and policy development and engagement with all health professions, we also provide advice and consultancy across many key areas of nursing and midwifery. Within a research-intensive university, our faculty values the development of a strong research community among staff and students and encourages cross-disciplinary and collaborative research.

As a student at Sydney Nursing School you will benefit from our suite of new and revised programs at both pre-registration and postgraduate levels and our strengthened research framework. In 2012 we are very proud to be offering a new and innovative Bachelor of Nursing (Advanced Studies) program for high-achieving undergraduate students. With a potential shortage of nurses and midwives in future years I am confident that this new program, along with our other nursing programs, will contribute significantly to preparing the next generation of nursing leaders.

We have designed our programs to help you develop the requisite knowledge, skills and experience to prepare you for a rewarding career in clinical practice and nursing and midwifery research, embracing the complexities and challenges of health care. You will be learning in an academically rigorous environment which, at the same time, is stimulating and supportive. You will also benefit from our relationships with other University of Sydney faculties presenting opportunities for interdisciplinary learning, research and professional relationship building.

Sydney Nursing School's values ensure that research, education, policy and practice development endeavours will be carried out in a culture of transparency, respect, inclusiveness, collegiality and cultural safety. This is a culture which relishes constructive, critical debate and intellectual challenge. It rewards innovation and creativity for students, staff and our clinical and professional partners.

Sydney Nursing School is going from strength to strength. We are proud to be educating the best nurses and midwives for communities near and far and to be undertaking research to influence future trends in treatment, patient care and disease prevention. So whether you are just starting out on the fascinating journey to become a nurse, or joining us to advance your nursing or midwifery career, or if you are one of our alumni, colleagues or friends, I welcome you.
