Applied Linguistics

The Applied Linguistics program trains you to use your knowledge of language and apply it in diverse contexts, including media, discourse analysis, and language teaching. At the end of this program students will look at the world around them with new eyes. They will learn to analyse texts that they encounter in their everyday and professional lives and will be able to apply this knowledge for a range of purposes.

The Applied Linguistics degree is designed for people who are interested in applying linguistics in other professional areas, including education, translation, journalism and media, language policy and planning, and social development. The degree is also suitable for people involved in teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL), second language teaching (SLT), and the teaching of modern languages. We teach both traditional face-to-face and computer-assisted methodologies. The units offered in this degree are informed by current research in systemic functional linguistics and the groundbreaking literacy initiatives of the ‘Sydney School’ in primary, secondary, tertiary and adult education. Our new areas of strength include World Englishes, the politics of English language teaching, media discourse, critical discourse analysis, and corpus linguistics. Some of the units of study in the degree include: Functional Grammar, Educational Linguistics, Language Society and Power, World Englishes, and Media Discourse.

Please note that there is no mid-year intake for this program.

Awards and requirements

Please refer to the degree resolutions in this handbook for information on the specific admission requirements for different award courses.

Graduate Certificate in Applied Linguistics
Candidates for the Graduate Certificate in Applied Linguistics must complete 24 credit points including:

• a minimum of 18 credit points of core units of study

• a maximum of 6 credit points from elective units of study

Graduate Diploma in Applied Linguistics
Candidates for the Graduate Diploma in Applied Linguistics must complete 48 credit points including:

• a minimum of 36 credit points of core units of study

• a maximum of 12 credit points from elective units of study

Master of Applied Linguistics
Candidates for the Master of Applied Linguistics must complete 72 credit points including:

• a minimum of 36 credit points of core units of study.

• a maximum of 30 credit points from elective units of study

• 6 credit points of capstone units of study

Candidates who have completed previous study in a relevant discipline may be eligible for a reduction in the requirements in accordance with the table below.

Master of Letters (MLitt) (Linguistics)
Candidate for the Master of Letters (Linguistics) must complete the two treatise units of study (24 credit points) listed for the course.
