Economics

The Economics programs provide training in theoretical and applied aspects of modern economics, econometrics, and financial economics, combining an enhanced focus on industry-relevant training with the academic rigour that has long been a hallmark of the University of Sydney School of Economics. It is the leading career development program of its type in Australia and a well-established supplier of graduates to both the private and public sectors. The Master of Economics is offered by the School of Economics although several units are taught by the Discipline of Finance in the Business School. There are two intakes per year for the Master of Economics, with classes commencing in March and August. Every effort is made to make this program accessible to professionals and part-time students.

Awards and requirements

Graduate Certificate in Economics
To be awarded the Graduate Certificate in Economics, students complete 24 credit points of foundation units of study.

Graduate Diploma in Economics
To be awarded the Graduate Diploma in Economics, students complete 48 credit points including:

• a minimum of 24 credit points of foundation units of study

• a minimum of 24 credit points of core units of study

Master of Economics
To be awarded the Master of Economics, students complete 96 credit points including:

• a minimum of 24 credit points of foundation units of study

• a minimum of 24 credit points of core units of study

• a maximum of 42 credit points of elective units of study

• at least one specialisation

• a minimum of 6 credit points of capstone units of study

Specialisations (18 credit points) are available in Economics, Econometrics, or Financial Economics. Students can complete specialisations in more than one subject area.

Candidates who have completed previous study in a relevant discipline may be eligible for a reduction in the requirements for the Master of Economics in accordance with the table below.
