CMPN5121 Composition Practice 1

Credit points: 12 Teacher/Coordinator: Dr Paul Stanhope Session: Semester 1,Semester 2 Classes: 1 x 2hr class per week - Composer Performer Workshop; 1 x 1.5hr seminar per week - Composition Practice Class; 1 x 60 minute one to one lesson per week for 12 weeks per semester Assessment: Completed Portfolio incorporating composition(s) (50%); Workshopped Composition (25%); Technical tasks (25%) Mode of delivery: Normal (lecture/lab/tutorial) evening
In this unit of study, composers aim to develop technical, musical, textual, stylistic and interpretive ability to a professional level. Students are expected to develop independence in technical practice and score preparation, and to integrate different compositional style and methods into culturally coherent musical works. Expert listening, analysis and constructive critique of one's own and others' compositions is an explicit aim. Composers work with student performers as part of this unit of study on a weekly basis.
CMPN5122 Composition Practice 2

CMPN5123 Composition Practice 3

Credit points: 12 Teacher/Coordinator: Dr Paul Stanhope Session: Semester 1,Semester 2 Classes: 1 x 1.5hr seminar per week - Composition Practice Class; 1 x 60 minute one to one lesson per week for 12 weeks per semester Prerequisites: CMPN5122 Assessment: Composition portfolio incorporating: 1 or more completed composition(s), presented in either a Capstone performance concert or publicly available digital portfolio, with digital documentation (80%); Technical Tasks (20%). Mode of delivery: Normal (lecture/lab/tutorial) day
This unit is the capstone unit for the M.Mus.Studies (Compostion) degree. Students will present a folio of new work developed over the course of a semester. The works will follow the specific compositional techniques and genre in which the student chooses to focus (such as choral, vocal, orchestral, chamber, electroacoustic, mixed media or film music) and the folio of works will also be presented in digital or performance mode. The final folio of work will also become an exemplar of the students' work that will be suitable for assessment as a sample of compositional style for future professional work opportunities.
CMPN5601 Composition Skills 1

Credit points: 6 Teacher/Coordinator: Dr Paul Stanhope Session: Semester 1,Semester 2 Classes: 1 x 1 hour lecture on sound recording skills per week; 1x 1 hour tutorial on sound recording skills per week, 1 x 2 hour tutorial on conducting technique per week Assessment: Recording portfolio and associated tasks (50%), Conducting assessments (50%) Mode of delivery: Normal (lecture/lab/tutorial) day
This unit develops practical and essential skills for emerging composers, particularly relating to effective communication of ideas to a musical public. These include training in conducting, and recording and documenting one's own music to a professional standard.
CMPN5602 Composition Skills 2

Through a critical program of artistic self-assessment and practical business tasks, this Unit of Study seeks to equip students with the tools to successfully present their creative product and carve out a unique artistic space for their future endeavors. The program is of relevance to independent-minded composers and performers seeking to identify and contextualise their individual artistic niche within a broader music community. In addition to providing students with ongoing tools to evaluate personalised artistic goals, completion of this unit will provide practical and strategic skills in analysing their potential market, securing stakeholders and developing planning approaches that successfully bring creative enterprises to fruition.
CMPN5240 Composition Internship

Credit points: 24 Teacher/Coordinator: Dr Paul Stanhope Session: Semester 1,Semester 2 Classes: 1 x 60 minute one to one lesson per week for 12 weeks per semester, 1 x 60 minute group class of all enrollees in this unit of study, occurring once per fortnight during semester Prerequisites: CMPN5123 Assessment: Composition portfolio incorporating: Composition(s) (60%); digital portfolio (40%); Written feedback from hosting partners (Pass/fail grade - a fail from the hosting partner = fail for the entire unit of study) Mode of delivery: Professional practice
This unit provides an opportunity for composition students to apply the skills they have learnt in Composition Practice 1-3 to 'real world' organizations. Participants will work with a single organization or group throughout the semester, writing a portfolio of new compositions or arrangements as negotiated by the host organization. The internship will be supported by one to one lessons throughout the semester.
