Overview

The Internal Medicine program is the first of its kind in Australia. It is a collaboration between The University of Melbourne and The University of Sydney which provides a unique depth of teaching and clinical experience. While the course is focused on doctors undertaking training with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, it offers a strong background in internal medicine to trainees and established clinicians in Emergency Medicine, Intensive Care Medicine and General Practice who want to develop their knowledge and skills in adult internal medicine.

The program aims to provide you with the knowledge and skills base required to undertake the Royal Australasian College of Physicians Adult Medicine Basic Training examinations. It also provides opportunities to pursue in depth, areas of future practice or interest.

The sharp increase in Australian medical graduates and a reduction in working hours for many doctors in training have reduced learning opportunities. This program provides flexible case –based learning that will enable you to maximise the learning opportunities in your clinical exposure. The course has been developed in response to requests from physicians and trainees to increase educational opportunities for doctors training and working in internal medicine.

All students enrolled in the Graduate Diploma or Master degrees complete Introduction to Clinical Epidemiology, then choose from stream specific and elective units of study. The stream specific units are offered at a basic and advanced level and over the next 2 years, all the major subspecialties will be available.

This course provides the opportunity to advance your clinical knowledge and practice in areas of interest, as well as develop expertise in other areas important to career advancement. The basic stream-specific units are aimed at the level of knowledge expected for the F.R.A.C.P Basic Training examination, while the advanced units offer greater depth in these areas of study. There are a broad range of elective units which include clinical decision making, medical education, statistical analysis, grant writing, and other research skills.

A great benefit of the course will be the opportunity to interact with other doctors who are at a similar stage in their career, share knowledge and skills in a supportive environment, and make key contacts with Australia’s leading physicians. The largely online nature of the course means that you can continue your educational program during rotation to suburban, rural and regional hospitals.

Only medical graduates with full or conditional registration in Australia or New Zealand may be admitted to the Internal Medicine degrees. The program may only be undertaken part time with a minimum completion time of two years. Candidates must be working, or have had substantial prior work experience, in clinical practice in Australia or New Zealand.

Course outcomes

The program has been designed to enable you to diagnose, investigate and manage the common and important adult diseases of the organ systems. The knowledge you gain will be directly applicable to patient care and readily integrated into your day-to-day work. The coursework will focus on clinical skills, rational use of investigative technology, appropriate therapeutic decision making, inclusive patient management, and assumes a working knowledge of the basic sciences. The program will emphasise evidence based practice while providing guidance in areas where the evidence base is lacking or inconclusive.

Course Information

The program is designed and delivered by experienced clinicians from teaching hospitals at The University of Sydney and The University of Melbourne who have an intimate knowledge of the needs of physician trainees. The case-based learning and support by practising clinicians makes this course clinically relevant. All the core unit of study learning material is provided online. The capstone unit (available 2018) provides an intensive face-to-face learning opportunity to consolidate and reinforce learning outcomes as well as an opportunity for you to interact with senior clinicians and fellow trainees.
