Education (Secondary: Mathematics) and Science

About the degree

Bachelor of Education (Secondary: Mathematics) and Bachelor of Science offer students a secondary-school teaching qualification in mathematics; or in mathematics and a range of physical sciences. The two degrees are completed in five years with the possibility of withdrawal to complete a Bachelor of Science only; after Year 1 some units of study may not gain full credit to the Bachelor of Science. The course covers professional teaching, special education, international education, and information and communications technology. School observation and practice teaching are integral components of the professional experiences in this degree.

A major must be taken in mathematics. A second teaching area can be taken in one of the following: biology, chemistry, geography, physics. Graduates intending to teach science at a secondary level need to complete at least one year of study in chemistry or physics during their degree

Requirements for completion

In order to complete this combined degree, the students must complete 240cp as described in the unit of study table.

First Year

In the first year, students begin the discipline studies for Mathematics and Education. Students will be introduced to teaching and learning as well as human development in children and adolescents. Students will begin their studies in both their first and second teaching area as well as the opportunity to complete other science units of study unrelated to their teaching areas.

Second Year

In the second year, students are expected to continue their discipline studies in the second year. Students will continue their learning in Education looking at psychology and social perspectives in this field. Students will also be introduce to problems that can arise with diversity and literacy in the classroom. Pedagogical practices will begin to be developed with identifying best teaching practices.

Third Year

In the third year, students will be introduced to pedagogical practices in both of their teaching areas. Their studies in Mathematics will continue towards completing their major. Students will also be introduced to Information Technology in schools. This will prepare them for their first 20 days of Professional Experience.

Fourth Year

In fourth year, students will continue developing their knowledge in general pedagogy as well as it relates to both their teaching areas. Students will begin their studies in Aboriginal and Special Education. Education research will also be introduced as it will be an integral part of evidence-based teaching. Students will also complete their second 25 days of Professional Experience.

Fifth Year

In fifth and final year, students will have the opportunity to complete Science units of study that do not need to relate to their teaching areas. Students will explore further into education areas of interest relating to current sport educational issues, global perspectives, Australian schooling systems, creativity and artistry, aboriginal community, cultural diversity, diverse needs or teaching international English. Students will also complete their final internship with 35 days of in school experience.

Honours

Education honours is an integrated program undertaken during the final three semesters of an undergraduate degree. It consists of two enrolled units Education Honours Preliminary and Education Honours dissertation.
