Bachelor of Applied Science (Physiotherapy)
Course overview
During this four year degree you will gain a comprehensive knowledge of physiotherapy, including areas such as musculoskeletal anatomy, neuroscience, respiratory and cardiac conditions, paediatric physiotherapy and preventative health care. Students learn through state-of-the-art simulations and practical experiences how to employ a range of drug-free techniques to treat and prevent injuries.
You will follow a prescribed course of study, comprising of 174 credit points of core units of study and 18 credit points of elective units of study, to qualify for the award of the Bachelor of Applied Science (Physiotherapy) degree.
The Bachelor of Applied Science (Physiotherapy) incorporates significant clinical and professional fieldwork opportunities, providing hands-on experience with real clients in a supervised environment. You will undertake a one-week clinical placement in your first year followed by five five-week clinical placements in years two, three and four.
The profession of physiotherapy is physically demanding and requires the development of a range of precise physical skills for its practice. You will be expected to carry out and have carried out upon yourself as stimulated patients, examination and treatment procedures used by physiotherapists. You should be aware that such practical sessions may involve partial disrobing and that participation in these classes is a requirement of the course.
Honours
The Bachelor of Applied Science (Physiotherapy) Honours program offers an integrated honours program. This program runs parallel to the pass degree. Students undertake some alternative units of study in the last 3 semesters of their four year, and complete their degree in the same time as students doing the pass program.
Honours study allows you to specialise in an area of personal interest, develop your research skills and make a significant contribution to the development of knowledge within the profession.
To qualify for the award of the honours degree a candidate must complete the requirements for the pass degree but include the alternative 18 credit point unit of study listed in the Honours pathway section of the Physiotherapy Table of units of study.
Professional accreditation
This course is accredited by the Australian Physiotherapy Council (APC). Graduates are eligible to apply for registration as physiotherapists with the Physiotherapy Board of Australia (PBA), overseen by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
