Table O - Open Learning Environment

Table O lists the units of study offered in the Open Learning Environment (OLE). OLE units offer students opportunities to build novel skill combinations and extend their knowledge by exploring other fields of study.

Degree requirements for OLE units

From 2018, students in the following degrees are required to take 12 credit points of OLE units:

  • Bachelor of Arts + all combinations of this degree (e.g. Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Economics)
  • Bachelor of Science + all combinations of this degree
  • Bachelor of Economics + all combinations of this degree
  • Bachelor of Commerce + all combinations of this degree
  • Bachelor of Advanced Studies + all combinations of this degree
  • Bachelor of Advanced Computing/Bachelor of Science
  • Bachelor of Advanced Computing/Bachelor of Commerce
  • Bachelor of Design Computing/Bachelor of Advanced Studies.

Note: Students in the standalone Bachelor of Advanced Computing have the option of taking OLE units in their elective spaces.

The 12 credit points of OLE units are to be assembled from two and six credit point units. Refer to your Faculty Handbook for your specific course requirements.

The two and six credit point OLE units can be found in the Table O unit of study table.

Zero credit point OLE units

Zero credit point OLE units are listed in the OLE Canvas website and are enrolled into through Canvas, not Sydney Student.

Some units have a matching two or six credit point version (allowing you to get a taste of the subject before enrolling in the credit point version), while others are standalone zero credit point units. The zero credit point units are free for any University of Sydney student, completely online and are available throughout the year.

OLE unit of study levels

OLE units are offered at the 1000, 2000, and 5000 levels. Students can take OLE units of their choice, but should note the different levels indicate the units have been designed with different audiences in mind.

That is:

  • 1000-level OLE units are intended for first year students or students with no prior knowledge of the subject
  • 2000-level OLE units are intended for students, with some assumed university level knowledge of the subject
  • 5000-level OLE units are intended for graduate students, especially Higher Degree by Research students.
