About Sydney Dental School

The Sydney Dental School is part of The Faculty of Medicine and Health, Australia's most comprehensive group of health-related schools, including Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Public Health and Medical Sciences. This multi-disciplinary approach to health education and research provides you with outstanding opportunities. We are committed to the sustainability of community dental health through dental health education, training and intellectual discovery. Integral to this are our University, government, industry and dental profession collaborations.

Our academic and professional staff are deeply invested in the success of our students and our engagement in multifaceted collaborations enable us to bring you the range of courses and opportunities on offer. We have strong links with the Institute for Dental Research at Westmead Centre for Oral Health, the Australian Dental Association and Australian Dental Industry Association. These partners provide us with expertise, practical insight and resources for our academic activities.

Our coursework programs cover the majority of general and specialist dental practice and public dental health. In these courses, the common goal is to develop graduates who are lifelong learners committed to the highest professional and ethical standards.

Facilities
Sydney Dental Hospital

Sydney Dental Hospital (SDH) is committed to providing high quality dental services to our local community, with a strong focus on patient and family-centred care. SDH is part of the Sydney Local Health District’s Oral Health Clinical Stream and is one of two major public oral health tertiary facilities in NSW. SDH provides a range of emergency and routine oral health services to vulnerable populations and has specialist dental services including Diagnostic Imaging, Orthodontics, Paediatric Dentistry, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Oral Medicine and Pathology, Endodontics, Periodontics, Prosthodontics, Special Care Dentistry and Community Oral Health. The Hospital plays a significant role in the development of the next generation of dental and oral health professionals through specialist mentor and graduate programs as well as Dental Assistant Traineeships for Aboriginal People.

Westmead Centre for Oral Health

The Westmead Centre for Oral Health is part of a major public teaching hospital and the provider of general dental services to the eligible population of the Western Sydney Local Health District. It is also a state-wide specialist oral health service provider for NSW. The Westmead Centre for Oral Health is equipped with advanced patient care facilities and operating suites. In addition to providing oral health care services, the centre has located within it the Institute of Dental Research. The goals of Westmead Centre for Oral Health are to (1) provide quality oral health care, (2) enhance community and professional relationships, (3) act as a centre for teaching and research, (4) operate an efficient and effective service. The Centre operates with over 200 clinical staff who see, with the help of the students and residents, almost 60,000 unique patients (as of 2018) representing more than 162,000 patient visits.

Nepean Centre for Oral Health

Nepean Centre for Oral Health is the third largest public dental facility in NSW. The centre was recently extensively expanded and redesigned with the final expansion commissioned in 2015, it is a modern, state of the art dental facility with 48 dental chairs. Nepean Centre for Oral Health is the main clinical training facility for the Bachelor of Oral Health and hosts final year students from the DMD program. Nepean Centre for Oral Health services a large population in Western Sydney and is a referral centre for the surrounding regions including the Blue Mountains, Lithgow and Hawkesbury. The facility is also a referral centre for oral surgery and is the main training site for the Doctor of Clinical Dentistry Oral Surgery program. In addition to a large cohort of general dental clinicians, the centre provides several dental specialties including Oral Medicine, Endodontics and Prosthodontics.
