Admission requirements

Admission to the:

  • Graduate Certificate in Medicine (Critical Care Medicine)
  • Graduate Diploma in Medicine (Critical Care Medicine)
  • Master of Medicine (Critical Care Medicine)

requires a medical degree and current medical registration in an Australian or New Zealand jurisdiction and current or prior employment as a medical practitioner in a clinical setting in an Australian or New Zealand jurisdiction.


Admission to the:

  • Graduate Certificate in Science in Medicine (Critical Care Medicine)
  • Graduate Diploma in Science in Medicine (Critical Care Medicine)

requires a bachelor or postgraduate degree in a health or science related discipline.

Admission to the:

  • Master of Science in Medicine (Critical Care Medicine)

requires the successful completion of the embedded degree program (Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma) with a minimum credit average; or a bachelor degree in a health or science-related discipline with honours or 12 months relevant work experience; or a bachelor degree plus a postgraduate degree in a health or science-related discipline.

Admission to:

  • Master of Medicine (Advanced) (Critical Care Medicine), and
  • Master of Science in Medicine (Advanced) (Critical Care Medicine)

requires the student to have completed the requirements for the Master's program with an average mark of at least 75% in 24 credit points of compulsory or stream specific units of study.

Course structure

The Graduate Certificate requires the successful completion of 24 credit points of stream specific units of study.

The Graduate Diploma requires the successful completion of 36 credit points of units of study including:

  • 6 credit points of compulsory units of study;
  • 24 credit points of stream specific units of study; and
  • 6 credit points of stream specific or general elective units of study.

The Master requires the successful completion of 48 credit points of units of study including:

  • 12 credit points of compulsory units of study;
  • 24 credit points of stream specific units of study; and
  • 12 credit points of stream specific or general elective units of study.

The Master (Advanced) requires the successful completion of 60 credit points of units of study including:

  • 48 credit points of study as required for the Master; and
  • 12 credit points of project units of study.

Students who are preparing for college primary examinations may consider undertaking:

    CRIT5004 Physiology for Critical Care

Students with an interest in anaesthetics may be particularly interested in undertaking the following units:

  • CRIT5012 Mechanical Ventilation
    CRIT5014 Resource Limited Critical Care
    CRIT5015 Extracorporeal Life Support
    CRIT5006 Retrieval Medicine Operational Environment
    CRIT5007 Clinical Retrieval Medicine
    CRIT5009 Teaching with Simulation
    CLNP5005 Neuromonitoring in Anaesthesia (stream specific)
    CLNP5006 Intraoperative Monitoring I (elective)
    HAEM5001 Thrombosis and Haemostasis in Acute Care (elective)
    PAIN5003 Pain Treatment and Management (elective)
    PAIN5018 Pain in Children (elective)
    PAIN 5021 Acute Pain (stream specific)

Students with an interest in intensive care medicine may be particularly interested in undertaking the following units:
