BUSS4901 Advanced Business A

Credit points: 6 Session: Intensive May Classes: 1 day workshop per week for 5 weeks. Prerequisites: Students must meet the entry requirements for the Bachelor of Advanced Studies (Advanced Coursework), including completion of a pass undergraduate degree and a major in a business subject area. Assessment: group presentation (30%); product review (35%); design essay (35%)
In this unit, students confront the challenge facing truly pioneering companies which is to develop customer-centric products and services that are aligned with the company strategy. This unit recreates the intense, team environment of a business unit undergoing innovation. Students integrate the skills, knowledge and experience acquired throughout the program to bring a real prototype to market. Design thinking methodologies are applied to demonstrate understanding of the challenges facing strategy implementation. Students work in teams with tight milestones. To do this successfully, students must use the skills gained throughout the program and critically reflect on the implications and impact of their learning.

Projects are a common way to coordinate activities in organisations. While traditional methods follow a planning logic and work well under stable conditions when intended outcomes are well understood, innovation and entrepreneurial activity requires a different logic. Agile project methods offer an alternative that values continuous change, flexibility, time-to-market, interactive learning and self-organisation over rigorous planning and control. In this unit students learn the ethos, principles, and methods of agile project management. Students experience hands-on a range of agile and team work techniques as applied in practice. Learning revolves around practical class room activities and be applied in project.

BUSS4903 Advanced Business Project A

Credit points: 12 Session: Intensive July Classes: Three x half day workshops, followed by ten days in community during which there will be 5 workshops and then a final half day workshop on return to Sydney. Prerequisites: BUSS4901 and BUSS4902 Prohibitions: BUSS4904 Assumed knowledge: Students require knowledge of strategic management tools, design thinking and project management skills. This knowledge is embedded in BUSS4901 and BUSS4902. Assessment: practice pitch (15%); final pitch (20%); consultant report (45%); business reflection (15%); peer evaluation - sparkplus (5%)

This unit provides students with the opportunity to learn how to apply business knowledge and skills to address complex social problems. Students work alongside social enterprises to help solve a problem identified by the project partners as crucial to their organisations' long term sustainability.
BUSS4904 Advanced Business Project B

Credit points: 12 Session: Semester 2 Classes: Five weekly two hour classes pre-departure, up to two weeks in country, three classes upon return. Prerequisites: BUSS4901 and BUSS4902 Prohibitions: BUSS4903 Assumed knowledge: Students are assumed to have completed at least one major in a Business subject area. Assessment: group presentation (20%); individual reflection piece (20%); individual project presentation (15%); individual project report (45%)

This project unit aims to immerse Business students in a live context in order to expand their perspectives and learn to apply their Business knowledge to researching complex problems and issues (social, cultural and/or economic). Students engage with multiple stakeholders in seeking answers and questioning perspectives, while learning cultural diplomacy issues. As part of the immersion, students travel to the relevant Southeast Asian country to better understand the context and to undertake small-scale themed, live projects shaped by economic, political, technological and socio-cultural forces that impact businesses, societies and markets.
BUSS4905 Advanced Industry and Community Project A

This unit allows students to work collaboratively in interdisciplinary teams on authentic, complex problem-based projects developed with project partners. Students engage in self-directed inquiry-based research to address problems or identify opportunities through exposure to insights into the industry that assist the investigation and provide context for the final recommendations. This unit develops students' complex problem solving skills through experiential evidence-based teaching approaches focusing on project management, reflective practices, and collaboration. This experience equips students with a toolkit to become more adaptive.
