Clinical Dentistry (Prosthodontics)

Overview

The course provides the opportunity to develop skills and acquire knowledge in advanced restorative dentistry and prosthodontics. The Graduate Certificate (Advanced Restorative) and Graduate Diploma (Advanced Restorative) are embedded within the Doctor of Clinical Dentistry (Prosthodontics).

Course outcomes

This course prepares candidates for work in a specialist practice in prosthodontics or a specialist clinic in a hospital.

Prosthodontics

Enrolments to the Doctor of Clinical Dentistry (Prosthodontics), the Graduate Diploma in Clinical Dentistry (Advanced Restorative) and the Graduate Certificate in Clinical Dentistry (Advanced Restorative) will be suspended for 2019.

Doctor of Clinical Dentistry (Prosthodontics)

(a) In order to fulfil the requirements for specialist registration in Prosthodontics, students complete 144 credit points in the sequence indicated by Years 1-3 below

This unit provides an overview for students at the postgraduate level of clinical procedural and evidence-based information on fixed and removable prosthodontics: complete dentures, overdenture care and where appropriated all pre-treatment procedures, as well as an introductory seminar series and preclinical exercises on fixed prosthodontics.

This unit provides an overview at the postgraduate students in clinical procedural and evidence-based information on advanced restorative dentistry. Seminars are provided on treatment planning and vertical dimension considerations to help clinical decision making for treatment planning with fixed and removable prosthodontics including implant-supported prostheses. Special attention is given to developing understanding and skills in recording jaw relationships and accurate transfer to articulator systems appropriate for complex prosthodontic treatment.

Research Methods in Dentistry is a postgraduate course designed to provide fundamental knowledge and skills in clinical research design and Evidence-Based Dentistry for students intending to undertake research at the Faculty of Dentistry.
All course material is provided through eLearning via the University of Sydney's website. A detailed series of notes and tutorial exercises are included in the study material. Students are required to complete one tutorial exercise/assignment each week and a final assignment at the end of the course.
Topics covered include introduction to Evidence-Based Dentistry, epidemiologic study design, basic biostatistics, as well as confounding, bias and measurement error. Considerable attention is paid to critical appraisal of journal articles which is an indispensable tool in the pursuit of clinical practice founded on Evidence-Based Dentistry. An introduction into conducting literature search, diagnostic test studies and systematic reviews is also provided.

This unit provides further training for postgraduate students in clinical, procedural and evidence-based information on advanced restorative dentistry. Seminars on a broad range of dental topics are given to underpin the decision tree to develop complex restorative treatment plans including implant supported prosthodontics. Specifically endodontic and periodontal mangement will be reviewed in light of the current literature as an adjunct to treatment planning.

It should be the equivalent of one paper which would be acceptable for publication in a peer reviewed scientific, academic or professional journal. This unit provides the introduction to a research project, including the development of a research proposal and literature review. The treatise is a formal piece of writing relevant to the subject area of the masters degree. Candidates will work on a specified research project under appropriate supervision. At least one of the project supervisors must be an academic staff member of the University. DENT6014 Dental Research Studies 5

Credit points: 6 Teacher/Coordinator: A/Prof Ky-Anh Nguyen Session: Semester 1,Semester 2 Classes: Weekly attendance in research seminars (70% attendance required) and 6hr research sessions. Prerequisites: DENT6013 or DENT6130 or DENT6230 or DENT6280 or DENT6330 or DENT6411 Assessment: Candidates will be required to submit a treatise or written work in the form of a paper dealing with research on a specific topic. It should be the equivalent of one paper which would be acceptable for publication in a peer reviewed scientific, academic or professional journal. In keeping with Academic Board policy there is an option to submit published work based on research undertaken while enrolled for this degree. Mode of delivery: Normal (lecture/lab/tutorial) day
This unit provides continuation of a research project, including data analysis, treatise write-up and submission. The treatise is a formal piece of writing relevant to the subject area of the masters degree. Candidates will work on a specified research project under appropriate supervision. At least one of the project supervisors must be an academic staff member of the University. The treatise or written work is in 5 parts all of which will be completed in a minimum of three years of full time study.
