Overview

Clinical neurophysiology is a broad discipline, encompassing diagnostic services for patients presenting with neurological dysfunction, systemic diseases and critical illnesses, as well as the provision of intraoperative monitoring of the nervous system during at-risk surgical procedures.

This program has two pathways (see below for details). The intraoperative monitoring pathway is designed for trainee and experienced anaesthetists, surgeons, and intraoperative neurophysiology scientists and technologists. The diagnostic pathway is designed for those working in a neurophysiology laboratory/ clinic and is suited to scientists, trainee scientists and those with appropriate qualifications seeking to enter this field as well as experienced and trainee neurologists.

Course structure

The Master of Medicine and Master of Science in Medicine requires the successful completion of 48 credit points of units of study including:

  • 12 credit points of compulsory units of study;
  • 24 credit points of stream specific units of study; and
  • 12 credit points of stream specific or general elective units of study.

The Master of Medicine (Advanced) and Master of Science in Medicine (Advanced) requires the successful completion of 60 credit points of units of study including:

  • 48 credit points of study as required for the Master; and
  • 12 credit points of project units of study.

The Graduate Diploma in Medicine and Graduate Diploma in Science in Medicine requires the successful completion of 36 credit points of units of study including:

  • 6 credit points of compulsory units of study;
  • 24 credit points of stream specific units of study; and
  • 6 credit points of stream specific or general elective units of study.

The Graduate Certificate in Medicine and Graduate Certificate in Science in Medicine requires the successful completion of 24 credit points of units of study including:

  • 24 credit points of stream specific units of study.

Students who work (or intend to work) predominantly in neurophysiology laboratories are encouraged to enrol in the following units:

  • Basic Sciences in Clinical Neurophysiology*
  • Diagnostic Electroencephalography
  • Clinical Neurophysiology Techniques
  • Advanced Electroencephalography
  • Applied Clinical Neurophysiology
  • Neurophysiology Professional Practice.

Students who intend to predominantly practise intraoperative neuromonitoring are encouraged to enrol in:

  • Basic Sciences in Clinical Neurophysiology*
  • Neuromonitoring in Anaesthesia
  • Intraoperative Neuromonitoring I and II.

*CLNP5001 Basic Sciences in Clinical Neurophysiology is compulsory for all students and must be completed either before enrolling in other CLNP units of study or concurrently during the first semester of enrolling in CLNP units. Students can apply for a waiver for this unit of study if they have completed equivalent study within the last 5 years. Evidence of previous study and successful completion of an examination on required knowledge will be required.

Sydney Professional Certificate

Sydney Professional Certificates comprise two units of study. Following successful completion the units may be credited to one of the relevant degrees.

Course outcomes

This coursework will provide graduates with a sound understanding of the theoretical principles and practical application of the commonly employed techniques in clinical neurophysiology. Graduates will develop the knowledge and skills to work in diagnostic and perioperative settings.

Course information

The courses aim to provide a structured educational program in neurophysiological monitoring to complement experiential learning in the workplace. This is the only postgraduate coursework of its kind in Australasia.

The program is delivered largely online with most units of study incorporating compulsory short intensive face-to-face teaching workshops held in Sydney. CLNP5001 Basic Sciences in Clinical Neurophysiology, CLNP5005 Neuromonitoring in Anaesthesia and CLNP5008 Applied Clinical Neurophysiology are fully online.
