Overview

The Critical Care Medicine program is tailored to the needs and interests of critical care specialists and trainees seeking further educational opportunities in emergency medicine, intensive care and anaesthetics. It is designed to produce well-rounded and analytical critical care clinicians.

The basic science curriculum of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine, (ACEM), the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA) and the College of Intensive Care Medicine (CICM) is addressed, as well as a range of targeted areas:

• Clinical Reasoning and Communication
• Clinical Toxicology
• Extracorporeal Life Support
• Mechanical Ventilation
• Pain Management
• Point of Care Ultrasound
• Retrieval Medicine
• Teaching by Simulation
• Trauma Management
• General electives include:
  - Essential Imaging for Clinicians
  - Psychiatry in Clinical Practice
  - Teaching in the Clinical Environment,
  - Writing and Reviewing Medical Papers.

The program provides opportunities to advance clinical knowledge and practice in areas of interest, and to develop expertise in areas such as research and clinical teaching.

Course structure

The Master of Medicine (Critical Care Medicine) requires the successful completion of 48 credit points of units of study including:

• 12 credit points of compulsory units of study; and
• 24 credit points of stream specific units of study; and
• 12 credit points of stream specific or general elective units of study.

The Master of Medicine (Advanced) (Critical Care Medicine) requires the successful completion of 60 credit points of units of study including:

• 48 credit points of study as required for the Master of Medicine
• 12 credit points of project units of study.

The Graduate Diploma in Medicine (Critical Care Medicine) requires the successful completion of 36 credit points of units of study including:

• 6 credit points of compulsory units of study; and
• 24 credit points of stream specific units of study; and
• 6 credit points of stream specific or general elective units of study.

The Graduate Certificate in Medicine (Critical Care Medicine) requires the successful completion of 24 credit points of units of study including:

• 24 credit points of stream specific units of study.

Sydney Professional Certificate

Sydney Professional Certificates comprise two units of study. Following successful completion the units may be credited to the relevant Critical Care degrees.

Course outcomes

The goal of the program is to improve clinical acumen and skills, and provide understanding and insights into the key research that informs the practice of critical care medicine. The basic science units of study are designed to prepare graduates for college primary examinations.

Course information

The program is designed and delivered by clinicians and academics from teaching hospitals and the University. The flexible format combines interactive online delivery with short intensive face to face teaching sessions in some units, and is perfect for clinicians whose continuing education is limited by time and distance.

The wide-ranging experience and knowledge of teaching staff ensures an up-to-date coverage of topics and issues related to clinical practice and evidence-based medicine.

All unit of study learning material is online and some units include face-to-face teaching sessions which provide skills training and an opportunity to interact with your teachers and fellow students.

Accreditation

The Australasian College for Emergency Medicine has approved the following units for the purpose of fulfilling the Trainee Research Requirement:

• CEPI5100 Introduction to Clinical Epidemiology
• CRIT5008 Evidence and Ethics in Critical Care, and
• PUBH5018 Introductory Biostatistics.

The following unit satisfies the coursework required by the Australasian Society for Ultrasound Medicine (ASUM) for the Certificate of Clinician Performed Ultrasound (CCPU) in all listed modules.

• CRIT5010 Point of Care Ultrasound

The Advanced Project may be undertaken to fulfill the College of Intensive Care Medicine formal project requirements.
