Overview

The Master of Medicine (General Practice and Primary Health Care) is designed for general practitioners, doctors training in general practice and those thinking of a career in primary health care.

The Master of Science in Medicine (General Practice and Primary Health Care) is designed for registered nurses who work or are planning to work in primary health care.

To meet the diverse needs of practitioners in general practice and primary health care the course structure will allow students to select from a wide range of units of study appropriate to their chosen career. The stream-specific units are aimed at enhancing the knowledge and skills required of practicing GPs, GP trainees and nurses in primary health care.

Some units offer greater depth in specific areas of study. There are a broad range of elective units which include clinical topics such as paediatrics and sexual health; and skills units such as teaching in the clinical environment, and statistical analysis; amongst others.

Note that the selection of units in the Master of Medicine differs from those in the Master of Science in Medicine.

The Advanced Master’s option, which is available to high achieving students provides an opportunity to carry out a supervised research project with a view to preparing a paper for publication.

You will benefit from the opportunity to interact with other clinicians, share knowledge and skills in a supportive environment, and make key contacts with Australia’s primary health care leaders. The predominantly online nature of the course means that you can continue your educational program while working anywhere with internet access.

Candidates for the Science in Medicine courses must show evidence of 12 months’ relevant work experience in primary health care. The combination of the Master level degree with full time employment means that you should allow a minimum of two years for completion of the degree and we expect that many students will take longer than this.

Course outcomes

The program aims to advance clinical knowledge and practice in areas of interest, as well as develop expertise in areas important to primary health care and general practice.

• understanding and analysing health care systems and the interface with primary health care;
• understanding the roles and responsibilities of the primary health practitioner for individuals, families and communities; and
• considering the well-being of the health practitioner.

The program will also equip you with knowledge and skills in clinical areas key to general practice and a framework in which to consider complexity in primary health care. The emphasis is on evidence based practice while providing guidance in areas where the evidence base is lacking or inconclusive. The program will prepare you for primary care research, policy development and leadership.

Course Information

The program is designed and delivered by experienced clinicians from primary health care and other specialties. In addition, the course is supported by research and teaching academics from the Faculty of Medicine and Health to ensure expert, up to date coursework supported by research. The case-based learning ensures that the course is clinically relevant. All core unit of study learning materials are provided online.
