Agriculture and Environment

Course overview

Postgraduate studies are available towards a Master of Agriculture and Environment, Graduate Diploma in Agriculture and Environment and Graduate Certificate in Agriculture and Environment.

Students who have completed relevant prior learning at an equivalent level may be given up to 24 credit points advanced standing.

Many units are based on compulsory fieldwork carried out before the semester starts. This means that all coursework students should be available to participate in fieldwork excursions two weeks prior to the starting date of semester.

Students may transfer between courses and receive credit for any completed units, provided they have not been taken out of the award from which they are transferring.

The Graduate Diploma and Master of Agriculture and Environment testamur will specify the area of specialisation:

  • Agricultural and Environmental Economics
  • Agricultural and Environmental Technologies
  • Horticultural Technologies

Course outcomes

Graduates of the Master of Agriculture and Environment program will:

  1. Demonstrate expert theoretical knowledge in the relevant areas of science and agribusiness that underpin approaches and management in agriculture and environment.
  2. Apply contemporary multidisciplinary and integrated knowledge of sustainability principles to complex agricultural and environmental systems of interwoven environmental, economic and social scenarios.
  3. Critically evaluate the validity and quality of information sources in agriculture and environment and identify knowledge gaps.
  4. Investigate, critically analyse and synthesise complex problems in economic, environmental and social contexts using evidence-based research in agricultural and environmental systems with strong personal autonomy and accountability.
  5. Apply advanced research principles and skills in quantitative and/or qualitative analysis techniques to analyse problems with creativity and initiative and adapt research findings to novel contexts to create positive outcomes and change.
  6. Resolve ethical dilemmas in topics such as food, soil and water security, to develop professional and ethical capacities for individual and group contexts.
  7. Interpret research findings and methodologies to create and evaluate interventions for professional practice in agriculture and environment.
  8. Communicate and translate research findings and concepts on topics relating to agriculture and environment from practice to specialist and non-specialist audiences.
  9. Work effectively and responsibly in an individual context and within diverse interdisciplinary teams.

The 2020 published resolution has been amended to introduce Table B for the Graduate Certificate in Agriculture and Environment. The following clauses have changed. They now read:

4 Admission

(2) Admission to candidature for the Graduate Certificate in Agriculture and Environment requires a bachelor's degree in Agriculture, Science or Economics or an equivalent qualification.

(3) Admission to the Graduate Diploma in Agriculture and Environment requires:

(a) a bachelor's degree in Agriculture, Science or Economics or an equivalent qualification; or

(b) completion of the requirements of an embedded graduate certificate in this discipline from the University of Sydney, or equivalent
 qualification.


5 Requirements for award

(1) The units of study that may be taken for the courses are set out in Table A and B.

(2) To qualify for the award of the Graduate Certificate in Agriculture and Environment a candidate must complete 24 credit points, including

(a) 12 credit points from units of study listed in the Table A Agricultural and Environmental Technologies specialisation; and

(b) 12 credit points from units of study listed in Table B.


8 Transitional provisions

(1) These resolutions apply to students who commenced their candidature after 1 June 2020 and students who commenced their candidature prior to 1 June 2020 who elect to proceed under these resolutions. Students who commenced their candidature prior to 1 June 2020 may complete the requirements in accordance with the resolutions in force at the time of their commencement.

4 Admission

(1)
Available places will be offered to qualified applicants in the order in which complete applications are received, according to the following admissions criteria. In exceptional circumstances the Dean may admit applicants without these qualifications who, in the opinion of the faculty, have qualifications and evidence of experience and achievement sufficient to successfully undertake the award.
(2)
Admission to candidature for the Graduate Certificate in Agriculture and Environment requires a bachelor's degree in Agriculture, Science or Economics or an equivalent qualification.
(3)
Admission to the Graduate Diploma in Agriculture and Environment requires:
(a)
a bachelor's degree in Agriculture, Science or Economics or an equivalent qualification; or
(b)
completion of the requirements of an embedded graduate certificate in this discipline from the University of Sydney, or equivalent qualification.
(4)
Admission to the Master of Agriculture and Environment requires:
(a)
a bachelor's degree with a credit average in Agriculture, Science or Economics, or an equivalent qualification; or
(b)
completion of the requirements of an embedded graduate diploma in this discipline from the University of Sydney, or equivalent qualification.

5 Requirements for award

(1)
The units of study that may be taken for the courses are set out in Table A and B.
(2)
To qualify for the award of the Graduate Certificate in Agriculture and Environment a candidate must complete 24 credit points, including
(a)
12 credit points from units of study listed in the Table A Agricultural and Environmental Technologies specialisations; and
(b)
12 credit points from units of study listed in Table B.
(3)
To qualify for the award of the Graduate Diploma in Agriculture a candidate must complete 48 credit points, including at least 12 credit points from units of study listed in the table for the selected specialisation.
(4)
To qualify for the award of the Master of Agriculture and Environment a candidate must complete 72 credit points, including:
(a)
24 credit points of core units of study; and
(b)
24 credit points of elective units of study, including at least 12 credit points from units of study listed in the table for the selected specialisation; and
(c)
24 credit points of research capstone units of study.
(d)
With permission, up to 12 credit points of the elective requirements may be taken from other courses outside the Faculty, including foundational units of study.

6 Specialisations

(1)
Completion of a specialisation is a requirement of the Graduate Certificate in Agriculture and Environment, Graduate Diploma of Agriculture and Environment and the Master of Agriculture and Environment, and requires the accumulation of 12 credit points chosen from units of study listed in the table for that specialisation. The specialisations available are:
(a)
Agricultural and Environmental Economics
(b)
Agricultural and Environmental Technologies
(c)
Horticultural Technologies
(2)
Candidates for the Master of Agriculture and Environment will complete a research project as part of their research capstone units of study. The research area of this research project is expected to correlate to the chosen specialisation. However, the number of research projects in each specialisation varies from year to year, and may be limited.
(3)
Not every specialisation is available every year.

7 Recognition of prior learning

Candidates offered admission to the Master of Agriculture and Environment may be eligible for recognition of prior learning in accordance with the University Coursework Policy.
