Course resolutions

The course resolutions detailed in this page apply to all courses included in the table below under section 1 (course codes).

These resolutions must be read in conjunction with applicable University By-laws, Rules and policies including (but not limited to) the University of Sydney (Coursework) Rule 2014 (the 'Coursework Rule'), the Coursework Policy 2021 (the 'Coursework Policy'), the Learning and Teaching Policy 2019, the Resolutions of the Faculty, University of Sydney (Student Academic Appeals) Rule 2021, the Academic Integrity Policy 2022 and the Academic Integrity Procedures 2022. 2 Attendance pattern

(1) The attendance pattern for the following programs is full-time only.

(a) Bachelor of Engineering Honours and Bachelor of Design in Architecture

(b) Bachelor of Engineering Honours and Bachelor of Laws

(2) The attendance pattern for all other Bachelor of Engineering Honours and combined courses is full time or part time.

(3) Part time students must still satisfy appropriate enrolment progression and are subject to the same degree time limits as full time students. International students are required to follow the enrolment pattern as specified by their visa. The Faculty strongly recommends full time enrolment as the preferred option for all undergraduate students unless exceptional circumstances exist.

3 Streams

(1) The Bachelor of Engineering Honours is available in the following streams in all combined degrees, with the exception of the Bachelor of Engineering Honours and Bachelor of Design in Architecture:

(a) Aeronautical Engineering

(b) Biomedical Engineering

(c) Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering

(d) Civil Engineering

(e) Electrical Engineering

(f) Mechanical Engineering

(g) Mechatronic Engineering

(h) Software Engineering

(i) Space Engineering

(2) The Bachelor of Engineering Honours and Bachelor of Design in Architecture is available only in the Civil Engineering stream.

(3) The Dalyell stream is available in the following combined degrees:

(a) Bachelor of Engineering Honours and Bachelor of Arts

(b) Bachelor of Engineering Honours and Bachelor of Commerce

(c) Bachelor of Engineering Honours and Bachelor of Science

(4) Completion of an Engineering stream is a requirement of the course. The requirements for the completion of each stream are as specified in the relevant degree tables and, in the case of the Dalyell stream, in Table D of the Shared Pool for Undergraduate Degrees.

(a) Candidates who qualify for the Dalyell stream must complete another Engineering stream in conjunction with the Dalyell stream.

(b) Candidates who qualify for Space Engineering must complete another Engineering stream in conjunction with Space Engineering, chosen from Aeronautical, Mechanical, or Mechatronic.

(5) Students in the Bachelor of Engineering Honours combined degrees can change the stream of the Bachelor of Engineering Honours portion of their combined degree on the bases and in the manner provided in the Bachelor of Engineering Honours course resolutions.

(6) Flexible First Year

(a) Undergraduate students entering first year in any of the Bachelor of Engineering Honours combined degrees, with the exception of the Bachelor of Engineering Honours and Bachelor of Design in Architecture, in Semester 1 may apply to undertake the Flexible First Year pathway, instead of choosing a particular stream.

(b) The Flexible First Year pathway is listed in the Flexible First Year Table.

(c) The Flexible First Year pathway is not available to students who enter the degree with credit for previous study.

(d) At the end of Semester 1 students in the Flexible First Year pathway must transfer into approved streams.

(i) Those students who have met the requirements for first year entry (ATAR cut-off or equivalent) into a particular stream will be guaranteed approval to transfer into that stream even though they chose the Flexible First Year pathway.

(ii) Students who did not meet the first year entry requirements for specific streams, but subsequently attained average marks in the Flexible First Year pathway that met or surpassed the requirements for those streams will also be eligible to apply for transfer into those streams.

(iii) The transfer requirements will be approved by the Dean or Associate Dean.

(7) The Bachelor of Science degree is available in the following streams:

(a) Health

(b) Medical Science

(c) Dalyell

(d) The Health and Medical Science streams may be taken in conjunction only with the Biomedical stream in the Bachelor of Engineering Honours.

(8) The Bachelor of Arts degree is available in the following streams:

(a) Dalyell

(9) The Bachelor of Commerce degree is available in the following streams:

(a) Dalyell

(10) Completion of a stream is not a requirement of the Bachelor of Science, the Bachelor of Arts, or the Bachelor of Commerce. The requirements for the completion of each stream are as specified in Table A for the relevant degree, or, in the case of the Dalyell stream, Table D of the Shared Pool for Undergraduate Degrees and Part 6 of these resolutions.

(11) Candidates who qualify for the Dalyell stream may complete that stream while also completing another stream.

(12) Candidates wishing to transfer between streams or exit from a stream should contact the Student Centre. Approval is required from the relevant Associate Dean

4 Cross-Faculty Management

(1) For the Bachelor of Engineering Honours and Bachelor of Laws, candidates will be under the general supervision of the Faculty of Engineering until the end of the semester in which they complete the requirements for the Bachelor of Engineering Honours. They will then be under the supervision of the University of Sydney Law School.

(2) Candidates in all other combined degree programs will be under the general supervision of the Faculty of Engineering for the duration of the combined program.

(3) The Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and the Dean of the Faculty responsible for the non-Engineering degree shall jointly exercise authority in any matter concerned with the combined course not otherwise dealt with in these resolutions.

5 Admission to candidature

(1) Admission to these degrees is on the basis of a secondary school leaving qualification such as the NSW Higher School Certificate (including national and international equivalents), tertiary study or an approved preparation program. English language requirements must be met where these are not demonstrated by sufficient qualifications taught in English. Special admission pathways are open for mature aged applicants who do not possess a school leaving qualification, educationally disadvantaged applicants and for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants. Applicants are ranked by merit and offers for available places are issued according to the ranking. Details of admission policies are found in the Coursework Policy.

(2) Admission to the Dalyell Stream requires achievement of a minimum tertiary admission rank (ATAR) set by joint agreement of the Deans and Heads of School and Deans of University schools of all the faculties and University schools administering degrees offering the Dalyell Stream, or equivalent.

6 Requirements for award

(1) For all degrees to which these resolutions apply:

(a) The units of study that may be taken for the Bachelor of Engineering Honours component are set out in the following Tables:

(i) the Engineering Flexible First Year Table

(ii) the Engineering Foundations Table

(iii) the Engineering Projects Table

(iv) the Professional Engagement Program Table

(v) the Engineering Stream Tables

(vi) the Engineering Specialisations Tables

(vii) for students in the Dalyell Stream, Table D of the Shared Pool for Undergraduate Degrees.

(b) where the requirements specified in the following subclauses of this clause account for less than the total required credit, candidates must complete additional units of study from:

(i) the relevant Bachelor of Engineering Honours stream table;

(ii) Table A of the resolutions for the relevant non-Engineering degree;

(iii) for the Bachelor of Engineering Honours combined with any of the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Commerce or Bachelor of Science: Table S; or

(iv) for students enrolled in the Dalyell stream: Table D of the Shared pool for Undergraduate Degrees.

(2) The Faculty Board may approve, based on appropriate academic justification and for particular Engineering streams or combined degree courses, a list of approved alternative units, permitting specified units within the otherwise applicable requirements for the Bachelor of Engineering Honours component of a combined degree to be replaced by specified alternative units that would form part of the normal program for single degree students in that stream.

(3) Bachelor of Engineering Honours and Bachelor of Arts

For the Bachelor of Engineering Honours combined with the Bachelor of Arts, a candidate must complete a total of 264 credit points and satisfy any additional requirements specified in the following clauses.

(a) For the Bachelor of Engineering Honours component, candidates must: complete a minimum of 168 credit points comprising:

(i) a minimum of 18 credit points from the Engineering Foundations Table, including all required units;

(ii) a minimum 30 credit points from the Engineering Projects Table, including all required units; and

(iii) a minimum of 120 credit points from the Engineering Stream Table for the stream being undertaken, including all required units; and

(b) must successfully complete the requirements of the Professional Engagement Program.

(c) In the Bachelor of Arts component the units of study that may be taken are set out in:

(i) Table A for the Bachelor of Arts;

(ii) Table S;

(iii) Table O; and

(iv) for students enrolled in the Dalyell stream, Table D of the Shared Pool for Undergraduate Degrees.

(d) candidates must complete 96 credit points in the Bachelor of Arts including:

(i) any required degree core units as set out in Table A; and

(ii) a major (48 credit points) or a 3-year program with an embedded major from Table A; and

(iii) for students not enrolled in the Dalyell stream, 6 credit points of units of study in the Open Learning Environment as listed in Table O; and

(iv) for students enrolled in the Dalyell stream: a minimum of 12 credit points from Table D.

(v) students previously but no longer enrolled in the Dalyell stream who have completed at least 6 credit points of Dalyell units of study are not required to complete any units of study in the Open Learning;

(vi) where appropriate, additional electives from Table A, Table S or, for students enrolled in the Dalyell stream, Table D;

(vii) If enrolled in a stream, complete the requirements for the stream as specified in Table A of the degree in which the candidate is enrolled or Table D.

(4) Bachelor of Engineering Honours and Bachelor of Commerce

For the Bachelor of Engineering Honours combined with the Bachelor of Commerce, a candidate must complete a total of 264 credit points and satisfy any additional requirements specified in the following clauses.

(a) For the Bachelor of Engineering Honours component, candidates must: complete a minimum of 168 credit points comprising:

(i) a minimum of 18 credit points from the Engineering Foundations Table, including all required units;

(ii) a minimum 30 credit points from the Engineering Projects Table, including all required units; and

(iii) a minimum of 120 credit points from the Engineering Stream Table for the stream being undertaken, including all required units; and

(b) must successfully complete the requirements of the Professional Engagement Program.

(c) In the Bachelor of Commerce component the units of study that may be taken are set out in:

(i) Table A for the Bachelor of Commerce;

(ii) Table S;

(iii) Table O; and

(iv) for students enrolled in the Dalyell stream, Table D of the Shared Pool for Undergraduate Degrees.

(d) candidates must complete 96 credit points in the Bachelor of Commerce including:

(i) any required degree core units as set out in Table A; and

(ii) a major (48 credit points) or a 3-year program with an embedded major from Table A; and

(iii) for students not enrolled in the Dalyell stream, 6 credit points of units of study in the Open Learning Environment as listed in Table O; and

(iv) for students enrolled in the Dalyell stream: a minimum of 12 credit points from Table D.

(v) Students previously but no longer enrolled in the Dalyell stream who have completed at least 6 credit points of Dalyell units of study are not required to complete any units of study in the Open Learning Environment: 

(vi) Where appropriate, additional electives from Table A, Table S or, for students enrolled in the Dalyell stream, Table D.

(5) Bachelor of Engineering Honours and Bachelor of Design in Architecture

For the Bachelor of Engineering Honours combined with the Bachelor of Design in Architecture, a candidate must complete a total of 240 credit points and satisfy any additional requirements specified in the following clauses.

(a) For the Bachelor of Engineering Honours component, candidates must: complete a minimum of 144 credit points comprising:

(i) a minimum of 18 credit points from the Engineering Foundations Table, including all required units;

(ii) a minimum 30 credit points from the Engineering Projects Table, including all required units; and

(iii) a minimum of 96 credit points from the Civil Stream Table, including all required units; and

(b) must successfully complete the requirements of the Professional Engagement Program.

(c) For the Bachelor of Design in Architecture component candidates must complete 96 credit points of units of study from the Bachelor of Engineering Honours (Civil) and Bachelor of Design in Architecture Table, including all required units:

(6) Bachelor of Engineering Honours and Bachelor of Laws

For the Bachelor of Engineering Honours combined with the Bachelor of Laws, a candidate must complete a total of 312 credit points and satisfy any additional requirements specified in the following clauses.

(a) For the Bachelor of Engineering Honours component, candidates must: complete a minimum of 168 credit points comprising:

(i) a minimum of 18 credit points from the Engineering Foundations Table, including all required units;

(ii) a minimum 30 credit points from the Engineering Projects Table, including all required units; and

(iii) a minimum of 120 credit points from the Engineering Stream Table for the stream being undertaken, including all required units; and

(b) must successfully complete the requirements of the Professional Engagement Program.

(c) For the Bachelor of Laws component candidates must complete 144 credit points of Law units of study from the University of Sydney School of Law Undergraduate Table, comprising:

(i) 102 credit points of compulsory units of study; and

(ii) 42 credit points of elective units of study, of which a maximum of 36 credit points are taken from Part 1 and a minimum of 6 credit points are taken from Part 2.

(d) Candidates may apply to take up to a maximum of 24 credit points of LAWS6000/JURS6000 units of study as elective units of study noting that:

(i) enrolment in LAWS6000/JURS6000 units of study will be subject to availability and any unit pre-requisites or assumed knowledge, which may include relevant industry experience or prior specialist study;

(ii) enrolment in LAWS6000/JURS6000 units is only permitted after a candidate has completed 96 credit points towards the Bachelor of Laws;

(iii) students may only enrol in LAWS6000/JURS6000 units listed in the Bachelor of Laws Elective units of study Table.

(7) Bachelor of Engineering Honours and Bachelor of Project Management

For the Bachelor of Engineering Honours combined with the Bachelor of Project Management, a candidate must complete a total of 240 credit points and satisfy any additional requirements specified in the following clauses.

(a) For the Bachelor of Engineering Honours component, candidates must complete a minimum of 156 credit points comprising:

(i) a minimum of 18 credit points from the Engineering Foundations Table, including all required units;

(ii) a minimum 18 credit points from the Engineering Projects Table, including all required units; and

(iii) a minimum of 120 credit points from the Engineering Stream Table for the stream being undertaken, including all required units; and

(b) must successfully complete the requirements of the Professional Engagement Program.

(c) For the Bachelor of Project Management component candidates must complete 84 credit points of units of study from the Bachelor of Project Management Unit of Study Table, including all required units.

(8) Bachelor of Engineering Honours and Bachelor of Science

For the Bachelor of Engineering Honours combined with the Bachelor Science, a candidate must complete a total of 240 credit points and satisfy any additional requirements specified in the following clauses.

(a) For the Bachelor of Engineering Honours component, candidates must complete a minimum of 168 credit points comprising:

(i) a minimum of 18 credit points from the Engineering Foundations Table, including all required units;

(ii) a minimum 30 credit points from the Engineering Projects Table, including all required units; and

(iii) a minimum of 120 credit points from the Engineering Stream Table for the stream being undertaken, including all required units;

and

(b) must successfully complete the requirements of the Professional Engagement Program.

(c) In the Bachelor of Science component the units of study that may be taken are set out in:

(i) Table A for the Bachelor of Science;

(ii) Table S;

(iii) Table O; and

(iv) for students enrolled in the Dalyell stream, Table D of the Shared Pool for Undergraduate Degrees.

(d) Candidates must complete 84 credit points in the Bachelor of Science including:

(i) 12 credit points of degree core units as set out in Table A; and

Note: MATH1xxx units taken from the Engineering Foundations Table of the Bachelor of Engineering Honours fulfill this requirement.

(ii) 12 credit points of 1000-level units from any of the areas of study listed in Science Table A, excluding the units listed in Table A degree core;

Note: Students may count the units from their major to fulfil this requirement.

(iii) a major (48 credit points) or a 3-year program with an embedded major from Table A of the degree in which the candidate is enrolled;

(iv) for students not enrolled in the Dalyell stream, a minimum of 12 credit points of units of study from Table O;

(iv) for students enrolled in the Dalyell stream: a minimum of 6 credit points of units of study from Table O and a minimum of 12 credit points from D;

(vi) for students previously but no longer enrolled in the Dalyell stream who have completed at least 6 credit points of Dalyell units of study, a minimum of 6 credit points from Table O;

(vii) where appropriate, additional electives from Table A of the Bachelor of Science, Table S or, for students enrolled in the Dalyell stream, Table D;

(viii) if enrolled in a stream, complete the requirements for the stream as specified in Table A of the Bachelor of Science or Table D.

7 Majors, Specialisations and Programs

(1) For the Bachelor of Engineering Honours component of a combined degree:

(a) Majors are not available.

(b) Breadth Specialisations are not available.

(c) Stream Specialisations are not available in the Aeronautical, Chemical and Biomolecular, Mechanical, and Mechatronic Streams; and

(d) all other conditions are as specified for the Bachelor of Engineering Honours single degree.

(3) For the Bachelor of Engineering Honours and Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Engineering Honours and Bachelor of Science, or Bachelor of Engineering Honours and Bachelor of Commerce in the non-Engineering component:

(a) candidates must complete a major or a program which contains a major from Table A of the non-Engineering degree.

(b) the majors and programs available and requirements for completing the majors and programs are as specified in Table A of the non-Engineering degree.

8 Requirements for Honours

(1) Honours in the Bachelor of Arts, the Bachelor of Commerce, the Bachelor of Science, the Bachelor of Project Management, the Bachelor of Design in Architecture or the Bachelor of Laws is available to meritorious candidates with requirements specified in the resolutions for the applicable degree, following completion of the combined degree.

9 Award of the degrees

(1) Candidates will be awarded a separate testamur for the Bachelor of Engineering Honours and for the non-Engineering degree.

(2) The award grades, and the criteria for the grades, are as defined in the resolutions for the constituent degrees.

10 Course transfer

(1) For the Bachelor of Engineering Honours and Bachelor of Laws, a candidate may withdraw from the combined degree program and elect to transfer to the Bachelor of Engineering Honours, by written application to the Faculty of Engineering.

(a) The candidate must then complete the requirements in accordance with the resolutions governing the Bachelor of Engineering Honours at the time of transfer.

(b) Candidature in the Bachelor of Laws will cease.

(2) For all other degrees subject to these resolutions, a candidate may abandon the combined program and elect to complete either the Bachelor of Engineering Honours or the associated combined degree in accordance with the resolutions governing that degree which apply at the time of transfer.

(3) Completion of the abandoned degree in the future will require a new application for admission to that course and completion in accordance with the resolutions governing that degree at the time of that admission.

11 Progression rules

(1) General progression rules for the combined degrees are covered by the resolutions of the Faculty of Engineering.

(2) Candidates in the Bachelor of Engineering Honours and Bachelor of Laws:

(a) must successfully complete LAWS1006 Foundations of Law before enrolling in any other Bachelor of Laws units of study;

(b) except with permission of the Law Associate Dean, must complete the requirements for the Bachelor of Engineering Honours before proceeding to Year Five of the Bachelor of Laws.

(3) Progression within the Dalyell stream

(a) With the permission of the Dalyell coordinator, candidates in the Dalyell stream may attempt units at higher levels than the usual sequence.

(b) Candidates must achieve a Cross-Semester Average Mark (CSAM) at a level determined by joint agreement of the Deans and Heads of School and Deans of University schools of all the faculties and University schools administering degrees offering the Dalyell Stream in each year of study or over each 48 credit point block to continue in the Dalyell Stream.

(c) Candidates who do not maintain a CSAM at the level determined by joint agreement of the Deans and Heads of School and Deans of University schools of all the faculties and University schools administering degrees offering the Dalyell Stream may continue in any other major, minor, program or stream into which they were admitted, but will not remain in the Dalyell Stream.

(d) Candidates enrolled in the Dalyell stream who do not satisfy requirements for the Dalyell stream but who otherwise meet requirements for the award course in which they are enrolled will graduate from the award course without the Dalyell stream. Students may not study units additional to the maximum credit points for their award course except with approval from the Associate Dean.

(4) Progression within Space Engineering

Students in the Space Engineering stream must meet the progression requirements for Space Engineering specified in the Bachelor of Engineering Honours resolutions.

12 Transitional provisions

(1) These resolutions apply to students who commenced their candidature on or after 1 January 2023.

(2) Students who commenced their candidature prior to 1 January 2023 may complete the requirements in accordance with the resolutions governing their candidature immediately prior to these changes.
