Course resolutions

The course resolutions detailed in this page apply to all courses included in the table below under section 1 (course codes).

These resolutions must be read in conjunction with applicable University By-laws, Rules and policies including (but not limited to) the University of Sydney (Coursework) Rule 2014 (the 'Coursework Rule'), the Coursework Policy 2021 (the 'Coursework Policy'), the Learning and Teaching Policy 2019, the Resolutions of the Faculty, University of Sydney (Student Academic Appeals) Rule 2021, the Academic Integrity Policy 2022 and the Academic Integrity Procedures 2022. 2  Attendance pattern

The attendance pattern for this course is full time or part time according to candidate choice.

3  Master's type

The master's degree in these resolutions is a professional master's course, as defined by the Coursework Policy.

4  Embedded courses in this sequence

(1) The embedded courses in this sequence are:

(a) the Graduate Certificate in Professional Accounting and Business Performance

(b) the Graduate Diploma in Professional Accounting and Business Performance

(c) the Master of Professional Accounting and Business Performance

(2) Providing candidates satisfy the admission requirements for each stage, a candidate may progress to candidature in any of the courses in this sequence and receive full credit for work completed in the prior award. Only the longest award completed will be conferred.

(3) A candidate for the Graduate Diploma in Professional Accounting and Business Performance or the Master of Professional Accounting and Business Performance may elect to discontinue study and graduate with a shorter award from this embedded sequence, with the approval of the Business School, and provided the requirements of the shorter award have been met.

5  Admission to candidature

(1) Available places will be offered to qualified applicants based on merit in accordance with the following admissions criteria:

(a) Admission to the Graduate Certificate in Professional Accounting and Business Performance is only by transfer from the master's degree or graduate diploma.

(b) Graduate Diploma in Professional Accounting and Business Performance

(i) a bachelor's degree or higher qualification (or equivalent) at an institution approved by the Business School and graded at a standard acceptable to the Business School; and

(ii) satisfaction of the English language requirements.

(c) Master of Professional Accounting and Business Performance

(i) completion of the requirements of the Graduate Diploma in Professional Accounting and Business Performance from the University of Sydney with a credit average, or equivalent qualification; or

(ii) a bachelor's degree or higher qualification with a minimum credit average (or equivalent) at an institution approved by the Business School; or both

(iii) a bachelor's degree or higher qualification (or equivalent); and

(iv) performance in an admissions test approved by the Business School to a standard considered satisfactory by the Business School; and

(v) satisfaction of the English language requirements.

(2) In exceptional circumstances the Business School may admit applicants without these qualifications who, in the opinion of the Business School, have qualifications and evidence of experience and achievement sufficient to successfully undertake the candidature.

6 Requirements for award

(1) The units of study that may be taken for the course are set out in Table A for the Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma and Master of Professional Accounting and Business Performance.

(2) To qualify for the award of the Graduate Certificate in Professional Accounting and Business Performance, a candidate must complete 24 credit points from the Graduate Diploma in Professional Accounting and Business Performance Table A or the Master of Professional Accounting and Business Performance Table A.

(3) To qualify for the award of the Graduate Diploma in Professional Accounting and Business Performance a candidate must complete 48 credit points, comprising:

(a) 36 credit points of core units of study:

(i) 24 credit points of foundation units of study; and

(ii) 12 credit points of advanced units of study; and

(b) 12 credit points of elective units of study.

(4) To qualify for the award of the Master of Professional Accounting and Business Performance a candidate must complete 96 credit points, comprising:

(a) 84 credit points of core units of study:

(i) 36 credit points of foundation units of study;

(ii) 42 credit points of advanced units of study; and

(iii) a 6 credit point capstone unit of study; and

(b) 12 credit points of elective units of study.

7  Recognition of prior learning

(1) Subject to the specific provisions of this clause, prior learning may be recognised consistently with the requirements of the Coursework Policy.

(2) The Business School may award credit or reduced volume of learning to candidates who have completed relevant postgraduate study at the University of Sydney.

(3) For all other candidates for any award in this embedded sequence, recognition of prior learning may account for a maximum of 50 percent of the course requirements for the relevant award.

(4) Candidates for the Master of Professional Accounting and Business Performance may be granted:

(a) on the basis of a relevant Bachelor’s degree or equivalent:

(i) up to 24 credit points of reduced volume of learning which may be applied against units of study as specified by the Business School.

(b) on the basis of relevant postgraduate studies or equivalent:

(i) up to 48 credit points of credit which may be applied against units of study as specified by the Business School

(c) on the basis of documented professional work experience of at least two years duration (full- time equivalent) in business or commerce which is considered by the Business School to confer a depth of learning equivalent to a graduate certificate:

(i) up to 12 credit points of reduced volume of learning.

(5) Candidates for the Graduate Diploma in Professional Accounting and Business Performance may be granted up to 24 credit points of specific or non-specific credit on the basis of relevant incomplete prior postgraduate study.

8  Progression rules

Unless otherwise permitted, candidates must complete the units of study in a prescribed sequence as specified by the Business School.

9  Award of the master's degree, graduate diploma and graduate certificate

The master's degree, graduate diploma and graduate certificate will be awarded in the pass grade.

10  Course transfer

(1) A candidate for the Graduate Diploma in Professional Accounting and Business Performance may elect to transfer to the Master of Professional Accounting and Business Performance upon completion of a minimum of 24 credit points and provided that a credit average is achieved.

11  Transitional provisions

These resolutions apply to students who commenced their candidature after 1 January 2023.
