Public Health

The course resolutions detailed in this page apply to all courses included in the table below under section 1 (course codes).

These resolutions must be read in conjunction with applicable University By-laws, Rules and policies including (but not limited to) the University of Sydney (Coursework) Rule 2014 (the 'Coursework Rule'), the Coursework Policy 2021 (the 'Coursework Policy'), the Learning and Teaching Policy 2019, the Resolutions of the Faculty, University of Sydney (Student Academic Appeals) Rule 2021, the Academic Integrity Policy 2022 and the Academic Integrity Procedures 2022. 1  Course codes

2  Attendance pattern

The attendance pattern for these courses is full time or part time according to candidate choice. Most units of study are available both in distance mode and face to face, therefore candidate's choice will determine mode of attendance. Visa restrictions normally limit International students studying within Australia to taking a maximum of 25 percent of courses via distance mode.

3  Master's type

The master's degrees in these resolutions are professional master's courses, as defined by the Coursework Policy.

4  Embedded courses in this sequence

(1) The embedded courses in this sequence are:

(a) the Graduate Diploma in Public Health

(b) the Master of Public Health

(2) Providing candidates satisfy the admission requirements for each stage, a candidate may progress to the award of any of the courses in this sequence. Only the longest award completed will be conferred.

5  Specialisations

(1) The Master of Public Health is available in the following specialisations:

(a) Chronic Disease Prevention

(b) Communicable Disease Control

(c) Health Promotion and Advocacy

(d) Research Methods

(2) All candidates will receive the same degree but the specialisation will be formally recognised on the degree transcript. The testamur for the degree will not specify the specialisation.

(3) A specialisation requires the completion of 18 credit points chosen from the units of study listed in the table for that specialisation.

(4) Completion of a specialisation is not a requirement of the course.

6  Admission to candidature

(1) Available places in the Graduate Diploma in Public Health and Master of Public Health will be offered to qualified applicants according to the following admissions criteria. In exceptional circumstances the Faculty may admit applicants without these qualifications who, in the opinion of the Faculty, have qualifications, evidence of experience and achievement sufficient to successfully undertake the award.

(2) Admission to the Graduate Diploma of Public Health requires:

(a) a bachelor's degree from the University of Sydney or equivalent qualification

(3) Admission to the degree of Master of Public Health requires:

(a) completion of the requirements for the embedded Graduate Diploma with at least a credit average in the core units of study; or

(b) a bachelor’s degree in public health, medicine, medical science, nursing, allied health (including physiotherapy, occupational therapy, optometry), dentistry, veterinary science, education, communication and journalism, science, arts, psychology, social science, political science, policy analysis, government, international relations, engineering, architecture, mathematics, law, economics, commerce, business, accounting and marketing from the University of Sydney or an equivalent qualification.

7  Requirements for award

(1) The units of study that may be taken for the courses are set out in the Table of Units of Study: Public Health.

(2) To qualify for the award of the Graduate Diploma in Public Health a candidate must successfully complete 48 credit points, including:

(a) 36 credit points of core units of study; and

(b) 12 credit points of elective units of study, from the Public Health electives Table.

(3) To qualify for the award of the Master of Public Health a candidate must successfully complete 72 credit points, including:

(a) 36 credit points of core units of study; and

(b) 24-30 credit points of elective units of study, from the Public Health electives Table.

(c) 18 credit points of elective units of study can be used to meet the requirements of a specialisation. Available specialisations are:

(i) Chronic Disease Prevention

(ii) Communicable Disease Control

(iii) Health Promotion and Advocacy

(iv) Research Methods

Completion of a specialisation is not a requirement of the course.

(d) 6-12 credit points of Capstone experience. This requirement can be met by completing any of the following options;

(i) 6 credit point Capstone unit, or

(ii) 12 credit points of the Research Project units, or

(iii) 12 credit points of Practice Placement in Public Health units.

8  Course transfer

A candidate for the master’s degree may elect to discontinue study and graduate with a shorter award from this embedded sequence, with the approval of the Faculty, and provided the requirements of the shorter award have been met.

9  Transitional provisions

These resolutions apply to students who commenced their candidature after 1 January, 2023 and students who commenced their candidature prior to 1 January, 2023 who formally elect to proceed under these resolutions.

Students who commenced their candidature prior to 1 January, 2023 may complete the requirements in accordance with the resolutions in force at the time of their commencement.
