Complete a medical placement in Orange or Dubbo

Discover the unique experience of a rural clinical year
Gain broader clinical exposure and patient care by undertaking a clinical year at one of our rural sites and experience living and working in a thriving regional locations.

A rural clinical placement offers medical students a number of personal and professional developments. For one year, you will have the opportunity to gain an insight into rural health in a great learning and teaching environment. 

You can undertake a rural clinical placement in your third or fourth year at the School of Rural Health in either Orange or Dubbo.

We offer placements to students in Commonwealth Supported Places, enrolled in the Doctor of Medicine (MD) at the University of Sydney.

As part of your clinical placement, you will be offered centrally located accommodation and student facilities to help you get the most out of your time with us.

Placement options

Medical students can apply to undertake a one-year clinical placement in their third or fourth year at our School of Rural Health in Dubbo or Orange. 

You will continue the Doctor of Medicine (MD) at one of our regional centres where you will experience a broad range of clinical exposure and patient care. You will have access to tutors and supervisors, mentoring with academic and professional staff, and opportunities to network with the local medical fraternity. 

Some eligible students can now also complete both the third and fourth year of their degree at the School of Rural Health as part of a two-year placement.

Please note: We are not currently accepting elective placement applications or making elective placement offers until further notice. 2023 elective applications will open in August 2022 for March – November 2023 placements. Elective placement availabilities and the application process will be updated on this webpage prior to applications opening. Do not submit an elective application until the 2023 applications open, as they will not be accepted.

Medical electives

Dubbo Base Hospital and Orange Health Service take applications for medical electives from Australian medical students. These are clinical elective placements only and do not include formal teaching or summative assessments to fulfill course requirements.

Accommodation

Affordable and centrally located accommodation is available for students completing extended rural placements at the School of Rural Health in Dubbo and Orange. Full details regarding accommodation will be provided to students prior to commencing placements at the School of Rural Health. How to apply

Medical students in Year 2 and Year 3 at the Sydney Medical School will be provided with all the relevant information including the application process and several key events.

You will be invited to an online information session with staff from the School of Rural Health and be provided with opportunities to visit our Orange and Dubbo sites, meet with current students and staff and tour the local community and medical facilities.
