Updated 1 November 2021: Due to travel restrictions in place related to the COVID-19 pandemic, The University of Sydney Medical School will not be accepting elective placement applications or making elective placement offers to students from international medical schools until further notice. This includes applications for the whole of 2022.
An update for students from Australian and New Zealand medical schools will be provided in early 2022 for placements commencing from March 2022.
We welcome domestic and international medical students wishing to undertake an elective placement with us at Concord Repatriation General Hospital.
The hospital is committed to teaching and research, and for many years has been one of the most sought-after hospitals for junior medical officer and registrar appointments. The hospital has a particularly strong commitment to integrated, inter-disciplinary teaching at all levels.
Elective placements are available from February to November every year. Placements last between four and sixteen weeks, with a minimum of four weeks in each department.
Please make sure the specialty is available for the dates you want before you apply by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org (do not apply directly to a potential supervisor).
Only one elective student is permitted per department at any one time, and departments are often unaware of their capacity to take an elective student - even if they have said they can accommodate a student.

Before applying, check with the Electives Coordinator (email@example.com) if the dates and departments you are interested in are available.
Once you have confirmed your dates are available, please complete and email the following documents to the Electives Coordinator:
Once the application has been submitted, it will be assessed accordingly and you will be notified via email when your application has been processed. Please be patient during this period as some delays could occur.

You must submit either original documents, or copies certified by your dean with the university seal stating that the document is original.
You are responsible for organising your own visa.
Medical Indemnity Insurance Written proof of Public and Professional Liability Insurance cover (including medical malpractice) is required for the duration of elective placement.
You may be covered by your university, otherwise you can apply for coverage with the Medical Indemnity Protection Society.
Elective fees are to be paid in full within six weeks of the elective offer email.
If you can no longer complete your elective placement at your desired time, you may be able to postpone depending on the availability of the clinical school. You will need to provide evidence in support of your application where appropriate at least six months in advance.
If a refund is granted, only the elective fee will be refunded and the amount refunded will be based on your date of notification.

Alternatively, the University of Sydney has an Accommodation Service department located at the main campus, which helps students find off-campus accommodation. They maintain an extensive database of accommodation in various areas (but primarily close to the University or within easy access to public transport). Concord Hospital offers limited accommodation to elective students staying 12 weeks or longer. Only long-term students are eligible to apply. Bookings are organised by the Electives Officer.
