Sir Edward Ford was a leading figure in public health in Australia and played a pivotal role in the anti-malaria campaign for Australian forces in the South Pacific during World War II. However, his most enduring legacy was that he produced the first Bibliography of Australian Medicine.

Edward (Ted) Ford was born in Bethanga, Victoria in 1902, and decided at the age of 24, after a year of Arts, to adopt medicine as a career. He spent his university time doing medicine by day, working in the Postal Department at night, and steadily reading through the shelves of the Melbourne Public Library in between. He graduated from the University of Melbourne in 1932 at the age of 30. After a period of hospital practice he entered academic medicine first as Lecturer and later as Senior Lecturer in Anatomy and Histology where, like his colleague and lifelong friend Kenneth Russell, he came under the charismatic influence of Frederick Wood Jones, himself a great bibliophile. During this time, he developed an interest in physical anthropology and later in tropical medicine. He became a Medical Officer in the Commonwealth Department of Health in the School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine in Sydney, and took its Diploma in Tropical Medicine in 1938.

In the same year, he undertook a study for the Papuan Administration on the epidemiology of venereal disease in the island and coastal tribal groups of Papua, including the Trobriand Islands, Goodenough Island and the d’Entrecasteaux Islands. However, his interests extended far beyond this subject, notably to an informed appreciation of native art and artefacts.

On his return to Australia, Ted became Medical Officer in charge of the Commonwealth Laboratory at Darwin. Shortly after the outbreak of World War II, he was released to enlist in the AIF as Commanding Officer, First Australian Mobile Bacteriological Laboratory in the Middle East. By 1946, he was Director of Hygiene, Pathology and Entomology for the Australian Military Forces. Ted played a major role in ensuring adequate protection against malaria for Australian and other forces in the South Pacific. He was mentioned in dispatches in 1943 and awarded the Order of the British Empire in 1945.

A year later, having graduated MD at the University of Melbourne with a thesis on malaria in the South-West Pacific, he was awarded a Rockefeller Fellowship. He studied at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, gaining the Diploma of Public Health with distinction in 1947.

In 1946, he was appointed Director of the School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, and in 1947, Professor of Preventive Medicine in the University of Sydney. He held both these positions until his retirement in 1968, also serving as Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Fellow of the Senate between 1953 and 1957, and as Acting Vice-Chancellor from November 1960 to March 1961. He participated in the foundation of the Medical School of the University of Western Australia and became a member of the first Council of Macquarie University. He was also a member of the Committee on the Future of Tertiary Education in Australia.

Outside the University, Ted’s influence in medical affairs spread far afield. He served on innumerable committees at a state, national and international level, including the National Health and Medical Research Council and its committees, the World Health Organization, in the field of medical education and research, and as a member of the Australian medical delegation to China in 1957.

Very early in his life Ted developed a love of books and learning. He was a keen and internationally known collector of books, mainly in the field of medicine and its history, but also in certain aspects of Australian literature. His books were lovingly maintained and often annotated in his neat, angular script, so that the reader may know their history and their associations. He was the leading authority on the history of Australian medicine, the most notable of his contributions being his Bibliography of Australian Medicine 1790–1900, compiled in the meticulous manner of his friend and mentor in this area, Judge J A Ferguson.

Ted was admitted to Fellowship of The Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 1946, in recognition of his distinguished medical contribution to the armed services. He participated actively in College affairs as member of the Editorial Committee of the Australasian Annals of Medicine (now the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Medicine) from 1951 to 1965, the Research Advisory Committee from 1952 to 1963, and the Committee on Occupational Health from 1952 to 1955. He was Vice-President of the College from 1970–1972.

In 1958, Ted became Curator of the Historical Library and Chairman of the Library Committee of the College. It is testimony to his gentle leadership, knowledge and understanding, as well as to his outstandingly generous material gifts, that the College Library has developed into a nationally important reference collection of the history of medicine generally, as well as in its field of special responsibility, the history of medicine in Australia.

Ted was knighted in 1960. He summarised his career and philosophy when he declined representation in a book on Australia’s great biologists. Writing in the third person to the editors, and signing as his own secretary, he stated that Sir Edward regarded himself as a physician, a teacher and an historian. =About the Online Museum and Archive=

Welcome to the Sydney Medical School Online Museum and Archive. The Faculty of Medicine formally came into being on [[Foundation of the Faculty of Medicine in 1856|13 June 1856]], initially for the purpose of conducting examinations for award of the degrees of Bachelor and Doctor of Medicine. Twenty-five years later the [[Opening of the Medical School in 1883|Medical School was opened]] and began the task of training doctors for the growing colony of NSW. In 1883, when the Faculty took first enrolments there were only four students taught by the Dean, [[Stuart, Thomas Peter Anderson|Professor Thomas Anderson Stuart Kt]], in a tiny cottage located near the Footbridge entrance from Parramatta Road. Since these modest beginnings, over 24,000 students have graduated and have gone on to achieve a diversity of accomplishments that have impacted upon the lives of many in extraordinary ways, both in Australia and elsewhere in the world. Likewise, from our pioneers to our current staff, this medical school has been advanced by remarkable medical professionals, administrators and educators.

Like the Sydney Hospital, St Vincent's Hospital had been in operation for many years before becoming recognised as a teaching hospital of the Faculty. St Vincent's was founded by the Sisters of Charity in 1857 with the intent of being a non-discriminatory public hospital, open to all regardless of nationality, religious belief or sex. From the start it also offered medical services to those who otherwise were unable to afford treatment. The hospital had always provided some medical education and local practitioners could apply to attend operations performed by hospital surgeons. Some of the Faculty's earliest graduates worked at St Vincent's Hospital, such as Frederick Milford, alongside Medical School pioneers Alexander MacCormick and Robert Scot Skirving. It seems that administrative rulings stood in the way of St Vincent's Hospital becoming associated with the Faculty for some time and it was not until 1923 that medical students were sent to St Vincent's from the Medical School.

The first Lecturer in Clinical Medicine was Oscar Albert Anton Diethelm and the first Clinical Tutor was George Reginald Percy Hall.<ref>Carrigan, C. Following Anderson Stuart's death, Professor James Thomas Wilson became the third Dean of the Faculty of Medicine. Wilson had been one of Anderson Stuart's early appointments, arriving in Sydney from Edinburgh in 1887. Another graduate of the Edinburgh Medical School, Wilson had been Resident House Surgeon at the Royal Infirmary and a ships surgeon before coming to the Faculty as Demonstrator in Anatomy. By 1890 Anderson Stuart had appointed Wilson to the foundation Challis Chair of Anatomy. Wilson began an enormous accumulation of specimens for the Museum of Human and Morbid Anatomy, as it was first named, amassing over 24,000 specimens by 1902. Wilson's greatest contribution to the collection was the appointment of Prosectors to provide high quality specimens for the Museum and to act as Demonstrators. The earliest photograph of Prosectors is dated 1903. Approximately 700 specimens were derived in this manner. The oldest remaining specimen in the Museum is a dissection of the heart by Dr G.H.S. Lightoller in 1908. Wilson's research centred on the anatomy of marsupials and monotremes, which was then of topical interest in the great debate about evolution. He gathered a coterie of anatomical researchers around him, including Grafton Eliot Smith and Raymond Dart whose originality in applying anatomical methods to anthropology and archaeology owed much to their contact with Wilson.

Wilson was made Dean in 1920 but in the same year successfully applied for the Chair of Anatomy in Cambridge.<ref>Cleland, K. Anderson Stuart dies in 1920

On 29 February 1920, Professor Anderson Stuart suffered an early death from inoperable abdominal cancer. He had become aware of the cancer in 1919 and is said to have faced the last eleven months of his life with fortitude and consideration for others. The students attending his last lecture in 1919, including his son Bouverie, stamped and sung through the lecture period then attached ropes to Anderson Stuart's car and towed the family Buick from the University down to Broadway as a tribute. In his time with the Faculty of Medicine, Anderson Stuart created one of the most important medical schools in the Empire outside of Britain. His name is extensively commemorated in the University. The old Medical School, for one, is now appropriately called the Anderson Stuart Building (since 1960) and features Anderson Stuart's coat of arms and the initials AS on the façade above the main entrance along with a carved raven, said to recall the Dean.

Towards the end of his life he dictated lengthy memoirs to biographer William Epps from his bed, attended by colleagues Alexander MacCormick and Robert Scot Skirving. He was buried in the Presbyterian section of South Head cemetery. His wife and their four sons, two of whom became medical practitioners, survived him.<ref>Webb, N. and Young, J. Influenza Epidemic of 1919

If the sufferings of wartime were not enough, in 1919 Australia followed in the wake of a world-wide influenza epidemic. In NSW alone, approximately 6000 people died because of influenza. Again, the Faculty of Medicine played an important role in fighting the deadly virus. During the epidemic, medical students were used to assist local doctors in treating the sick and dying in both hospitals and homes. Local hospitals were full to capacity and emergency hospitals were set up around the city in places like the Showground. Students were called upon to assist qualified doctors attend to those who presented with the flu. The risk of contracting the infection whilst carrying out this work was high and students were heavily masked whilst attending patients. NSW Public Health Department report that in 1919, almost 40 per cent of Sydney's total population had influenza. In some areas of Sydney, the deaths from influenza accounted for 50 per cent of all deaths.<ref>http://www.health.nsw.gov.au accessed May 2007.</ref>

Emergency measures were carried out on campus, such as the wearing of face masks in classrooms and the University was closed for a period of six weeks at one stage. To make up for this loss of study time, the June and September vacations were shortened and the end of year examinations held later than usual.

First Chair in Pharmacology in 1918

In 1918, Anderson Stuart created a Chair in Pharmacology and appointed his protégé Henry George Chapman to the position. Chapman, a Melbourne University graduate, had been favoured by Anderson Stuart since his appointment as Demonstrator in Physiology in 1903. After graduation, Chapman had been acting Professor of Physiology and then, in 1902, a demonstrator on Pathology at the Melbourne University. During this year, he wrote his doctoral thesis on the topic of the musculature of Echidna hystrix, for which he received his MD in 1903. He then came to the Faculty of Medicine as Demonstrator in Physiology and quickly rose through the academic ranks to lecturer, then Assistant Professor in Physiology (1913-1918). In 1918 Chapman became foundation Professor in Pharmacology.

When Anderson Stuart died in 1920, Chapman resigned his professorship of Pharmacology to take up the Chair of Physiology (1920-1928). Although academically brilliant, Chapman proved unequal to his mentor's trust, and took his own life in 1934 after his complicity in mismanagement of research funds became known. Victor Chang was responsible for the establishment of Australia's National Heart Transplant Program at St Vincent's Hosptital, Sydney in 1984 and was its head surgeon.<ref>Much of the information for this biography is drawn and edited directly from the website of the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute website http://www.victorchang.com.au</ref>
Victor (Yam Him) was born in Shanghai of Australian-born Chinese parents. He came to Australia in 1953 to complete his secondary schooling at Christian Brothers College, Lewisham. He undertook a Bachelor of Medical Science, followed by a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery at the University of Sydney and then worked for two years as an intern and a registrar of cardiothoracic surgery at St Vincent's Hospital.

He received further training at the Brompton Hospital for Chest Diseases in London and became the Chief Resident at the Mayo Clinic in the USA. During this time, he was awarded Fellowships to the Royal College of Surgeons, the Australasian College of Surgeons and the American College of Surgeons.

Victor then returned to St Vincent's Hospital in 1972 to join their cardiothoracic team, which already included Dr Harry Windsor and Dr Mark Shanahan. In 1980, when heart transplants became more feasible due to the development of an anti-rejection drug, Victor made the initial submission to the government for a cardiac transplant program at St Vincent's Hospital and personally lobbied the government and businessmen for the funds to help finance the National Heart Transplant Program which commenced in 1983. He was responsible for the establishment of the National Heart Transplant Program at St Vincent's Hospital in 1984.

On 24 February 1984,Victor led a team of 40 to perform the first transplant under the program at St Vincent's Hospital. At the time of his tragic death, the team had performed 266 heart transplants, 22 heart-lung transplants and six single lung transplants. With a 92 per cent patient survival rate one year after surgery and an 85 per cent survival rate five years after surgery, Victor's team had become one of the most successful in the world. During the 1980s, he travelled and lectured extensively in China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia. He was the founder and President of the Australasian-China Medical Education and Scientific Research Foundation which began sponsoring South-East Asian doctors, nurses and students to work in Australia, enabling them to return to improve the quality of patient care in their own countries. Victor also initiated the sponsorship of many teams from St Vincent's to China, Singapore and Indonesia where they shared their medical, surgical, nursing, hospital administrative and audiovisual skills and knowledge. He was honorary Professor of Surgery to the Chinese Academy of Medical Science in Beijing, honorary Professor of Surgery to Shanghai Medical School and official Adviser on cardiac surgery development in Indonesia. In 1982, he was appointed as a Council member of the Australia China Council.

Victor was an original thinker and saw the need for research and development of various cardiothoracic devices. In his last project, he designed an artificial heart valve, coined the St Vincent's Heart Valve, which is produced overseas and is used to treat hundreds of patients in South East Asia.

In 1986 Victor Chang was awarded a Companion of the Order of Australia by the Governor-General.

He died tragically in Sydney on 4 July 1991.

<ibimage>FMMUS242|right</ibimage>John Beveridge was Foundation Professor of Paediatrics at the University of NSW and was key in the development of the Sydney Children’s Hospital.

John graduated from the University of Sydney with the University Medal in Medicine, having come first in all but one of the subjects taken in his two degrees. He took up a residency at [[Royal Prince Alfred Hospital]] and Concord Hospital, where he remained for four years. In 1951, he began studying paediatrics at the Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children and within a year had become Chief Resident Medical Officer, a role he retained for three years. During this time he realised that paediatrics was the work he wanted to do. From the start, he is remembered for his high standards of service and care:

He insisted on meticulous clinical standards and record keeping. Similarly, he demanded from others the same dedication he took for granted in himself; if a child in his care was seriously ill, Beveridge was often found sleeping beside the child’s cot. Beveridge’s work, against strong opposition, helped transform the Royal Alexandra (of which he had become chief resident medical officer) from a cottage hospital into a potentially great teaching hospital. He travelled widely overseas, broadening his experience and knowledge (and in later years, making an international reputation).<ref>From obituary, author unknown.</ref>

In the late 1950s, John fostered outreach programs which took paediatrics specialists to outback NSW, as well as doing country rounds in the north-west of the State in person and visiting Mauritius, Fiji, PNG and Vanuatu.<ref>The High Bulletin, Vol XLV, no 3.</ref> Concurrently, he established himself in private practice in Macquarie Street.

In 1962, he was appointed Foundation Professor of Paediatrics at the University of NSW and Clinical Director of the Prince of Wales Children’s Hospital, the building of which became his life’s work. Professor John Yu said of him, “John Beveridge and the Prince of Wales Children’s Hospital are synonymous: he conceived the hospital and built it brick by brick, ensuring that it met his own personal standards of excellence.” Les White adds:

"The clinical service grew from borrowed wards at Prince Henry Hospital to refurbished army huts at the Prince of Wales Hospital Group, then expanding into the new buildings of the Prince of Wales Children’s Hospital in 1976. JB was absolutely in charge of all aspects of the service and its various stages of redevelopment.<ref>From the eulogy for John Beveridge, provided by Les White.</ref>"

The Sydney Children’s Hospital became a model of child-centred hospital design and practices.

John also held a prominent position in the Royal Australasian College of Physicians. In this capacity he held enormous influence on policy and practice development within and beyond paediatrics. From 1970 to 1981, he served as the first Paediatric Censor of the College and was a member of Council from 1977 to 1983. He also served on Government and Health Department committees, even after his retirement.

In 1978, John was made an Officer of the Order of Australia for “services to medicine, particularly as a clinical paediatrician”.<ref>http://www.itsanhonour.gov.au/</ref> He was awarded the Medal of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 1988 and the Howard Williams Medal from the Australasian College of Physicians in 1995.

The medical school commenced teaching in March 1883 with four students in a four-roomed cottage built between the Great Hall of the University and Parramatta Road. Initially, the medical school staff consisted of Professor Anderson Stuart as the only full-time academic and one mortuary attendant. Hence, the students began their medical training by dissecting under the eagle eye of Anderson Stuart himself.

From the first, Anderson Stuart pursued a programme of academic excellence and expansion, and over almost four decades as Dean he attracted first class colleagues from the leading Scottish universities, promoted post-graduate training for the first generation of local graduates, and adroitly amassed support for his grandiose building programme. The Faculty of Medicine remains proud to honour his vision and achievement. He established University based medical education in Sydney at a time when most English practitioners were still the product of apprenticeships and hospital based medical schools. This was in tune with the aspirations of the new generation of native born Australians who saw first rate professional education as a key route to emergence from colonial status.<ref>Young, J. and Webb, N.
