Curator Jan Brazier introduces the Australian women working in commercial photography 1850-1920.
On 12 June 1871, the Illustrated Sydney News observed about 'Lady Photographers’ that the womanly attributes of ‘Delicacy, cleanliness, patience and … long suffering’ were the conditions essential for success for working in photography. Women certainly did work in commercial studios in a range of roles, yet uncovering their contribution is difficult.
This talk explores this history by looking at the stories of some of the women working in photography in Australia from the mid-19th to the early 20th century.
