This project, led by Professor Matthew Cleary, aims to create a highly skilled workforce to transform Australia’s capacity to develop, manufacture and maintain high-speed propulsion, rocket and launch systems.

By building domestic capacity and reducing reliance on foreign suppliers, the project aims to revolutionise Australia’s strategic approach to defence and space launch systems.

This should provide significant benefits by boosting technical resilience and the sustainability of our defence and space supply chains.

"Strategic and ongoing industry engagement means we are always on the front foot, ensuring research is grounded in real world applications that benefit our global community," said Professor Hesham El Gamal, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering.

"Professor Matthew Cleary's work in this space along with his team's deep collaboration with leading industry partners, highlights the importance of pursuing translational research.

“I extend a warm congratulations to Professor Cleary and his team for this incredible achievement," Professor El Gamal said.

Our researchers don’t just tackle the big issues. They also build pathways to the practical application of their research, and the benefit it can bring to the broader community

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research)

Professor Julie Cairney, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) at the University of Sydney, is delighted that the new Training Centre will support University of Sydney researchers to collaborate with research, training and industry partners in Australia, the United Kingdom and the USA.

“The University of Sydney has a strong commitment to supporting excellence in research, and this new Training Centre will empower our researchers to engage with others from within the University and beyond.

“Our researchers don’t just tackle the big issues. They also build pathways to the practical application of their research, and the benefit it can bring to the broader community,” said Professor Cairney.
