Our Flag Policy explains the rules for flying and displaying flags on University grounds and using University flagpoles. Some flags are flown permanently, like the Australian National Flag, the Australian Aboriginal Flag, and the Torres Strait Islander Flag.

This policy also provides guidelines for flying flags at half-mast and sets out the approval process for flying other flags.

Staff, affiliates, students, and visitors: to understand the requirements for flying and displaying flags on University lands.

University Brand Team and Central Operations Services: to help manage the display of flags.

  • The Australian National Flag, Australian Aboriginal Flag, and Torres Strait Islander Flag are flown permanently at Manning Road entrance on Camperdown Campus.
  • The Clock Tower flagpole in the Quadrangle usually flies the University flag, but may fly another approved flag.
  • Requests for flags to be flown from the Clock Tower can be emailed to the Office of the Vice-Chancellor, with specific flag details and an explanation.
  • Other flagpoles, like those on Eastern Avenue, are for University promotional purposes and require Brand Team approval.
  • Flags may be flown at half-mast on specific occasions, such as the death of a current/former Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor, or Australian Prime Minister.

Flags may be temporarily displayed for a short period, relevant to an event or meeting, provided they are not inappropriate. They are not permitted:

  • in indoor shared spaces (unless for short-term event relevance)
  • if they pose a safety risk
  • if they cause property damage
  • if they block light
  • if they imply University endorsement.

Flags are deemed inappropriate and not permitted, if they:

  • represent unlawful activities
  •  are inconsistent with our values (excellence, trust, accountability)
  • advertise or promote a commercial activity
  • represent a political party
  • are otherwise considered unsuitable by the University.

Central Operations Services staff may remove unapproved or inappropriate flags.

Other individuals are not permitted to damage or remove flags.

Breaches may lead to misconduct proceedings.
