Our Leave Policy explains the types of leave University staff can take, and the process for each type. It encourages staff and managers to plan, approve, and manage leave in a way that supports wellbeing and balances personal needs with the University’s operations.

Annual leave

4 weeks per year for full-time staff.

  • For recreation and rest.
  • If you accrue more than 40 days:
    • you can cash out up to 10 days if you take an equal amount of leave
    • you may be directed to take leave to reduce the balance.

Personal leave

2 weeks in your first year of employment and 10 weeks for every year after that.

For things like:

  • personal illness/injury
  • menstrual/menopausal reasons
  • assisted reproductive health services
  • gender affirmation (if specific leave is exhausted)
  • to care for an immediate family, household, or kinship group member due to illness, injury, or emergency.

Long service leave

3 months leave on full pay after 10 years' continuous service to the University.

Parental leave

Paid and unpaid leave for maternity, partner, primary caregiver, and adoption/permanent placement.

How much you are entitled to varies based on employment type and length of service.

Compassionate leave

Up to 5 days of paid leave per occasion.

For things like:

  • death or serious illness of immediate family or household or kinship group members
  • stillbirth
  • miscarriage

Special leave

Up to 3 days paid leave per year for circumstances not covered by other leave types.

For things like:

  • cultural/religious events
  • moving house (one day per year)
  • natural disasters (up to five additional days for immediate recovery)

Gender affirmation leave

Up to 30 days of paid leave is available from the start of employment to support gender affirmation.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural leave

Up to 7 days of paid special leave, plus an equal amount of unpaid leave, for cultural or ceremonial obligations.

Family and domestic violence leave

Up to 20 days paid leave.

Part-time staff receive up to 20 days pro-rata or a minimum of 10 days, whichever is greater.

Research and professional development leave

Up to 3 days per year after 12 months' continuous service.

Professional staff can also convert up to 5 days of personal leave to career development leave.

Casual staff may be eligible for:

  • paid special leave (up to 5 calendar days per year) for personal ill-health or family care
  • paid long service leave (for service from 1 January 2010)
  • 10-20 days of paid family and domestic violence leave
  • unpaid leave for personal illness or caring responsibilities.
