Staff, affiliates (including volunteers), and students: to understand the expectations and requirements for making public comments and using social media.

Social media managers: to help manage official University accounts.

When engaging in University-related public comment or social media use, University community members must:

  • uphold our values (excellence, trust, accountability) and ethical framework.
  • act consistently with the Charter of Freedom of Speech and Academic Freedom.
  • take reasonable care for safety and comply with all laws and University policies.
  • not bully, harass, discriminate, be misleading, breach privacy, publish restricted or prohibited material, encourage illegal activity, or disclose confidential information.

Official Public Comment:

  • Made on the University's behalf by authorised representatives.
  • Must comply with all laws and University policies.

Professional Public Comment:

  • Made by academic or qualified professional staff within their area of expertise.
  • Commentators should identify their role but not imply University endorsement or representation.
  • Users are responsible for content.

Personal Public Comment:

  • Made by any member of the University community in their individual capacity.
  • Must be made from a personal account, without University branding or implying University endorsement.
  • If the University is mentioned, a disclaimer should be included.

  • Official University social media accounts require approval
    • Heads of School approve learning and teaching accounts 
    • the Head of Social Media and Content approves all other official accounts.
  • All official accounts must be registered in the Social Media Register maintained by the Head of Social Media and Content.
  • The University will not support unregistered official accounts.
