Charcoal production during prescribed fire and its role in carbon turnover

Prescribed fires convert variable amounts of biomass into a variety of forms of ‘black carbon’.  Both the rate (and efficiency) of conversion and the forms of black C produced vary widely but little is known about these processes. This project will be supervised by Dr Meaghan Jenkins, Professor John Crawford, Professor Mark Adams from the University of Sydney

Professor Mark Adams.

Research location

Sydney Institute of Agriculture - Australian Technology Park

Program type

Likewise, the forms of black C produced have variable but largely unknown consequences for soil C storage.  This project will focus on determining rates of black C production (biomass conversion), with additional studies of black C dynamics in soils.

Additional information

The Bushfire Cooperative Research Centre and the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Sydney, are pleased to announce full ($28K) and top-up ($10K) scholarships for students interested in researching key issues for fire-fighting and land management agencies around Australia.
