Graph-based Methods in Power Networks Analysis, Optimisation and Control

Summary

The analysis tools for power networks assume that the network is either a transmission or a distribution network. These days with distributed generation, demand-side control, storage and bi-lateral power flows, there is a less clear boundary. We are exploring new modelling, analysis, optimisation and control concepts which are based on tools to capture the network connectivity in its granulated form from high to low voltage levels.

Supervisor

Professor David John Hill.

Research location

Electrical and Computer Engineering

Program type

Masters/PHD

Synopsis

Students interested in this project must be prepared to rethink the basic tools such as power flow, optimal power flow, stability analysis and various control schemes to work in new situations. This will involve some theoretical and/or numerical investigations to test new approaches.

Additional information

The suggested projects will build on past work by the supervisors on structure-preserving models in stability analysis, voltage stability, power flow theory and complex networks synchronism and distributed control.
