This project focuses on the evolution and diversity of endogenous retroviruses (ERVs) in crocodiles

Masters/PHD
This project investigates the gene capture by ERVs in crocodilian species. This follows up on previous studies in which we have revealed the capture of two host mRNA by ERVs: KIT-ligand and nectin3 genes. This project aims to understand the extent of this gene capture among the genomes of 20 crocodilian species. There is also the scope to investigate the significance of gene capture by ERVs for biomedical research. This project will involve bioinformatic analyses, DNA and RNA data.

- Ability to perform independently and/or with minimal supervision;
- Ability to undertake certain physical tasks (e.g. heavy lifting);
- Ability to undertake observatory, sensory and communication tasks;
- Ability to spend time at remote sites (e.g. One Tree Island, Narrabri and Camden);
- Ability to work in confined spaces or at heights;
- Ability to operate heavy machinery (e.g. farming equipment);
- Hold or acquire an Australian driver’s licence;
- Hold a current scuba diving license;
