Linking emotional intelligence to emotion regulation using the experience sampling method


Emotional intelligence focuses on differences in people’s capacity to perceive, understand, and regulate emotion, whereas emotion regulation focuses on processes underlying which emotions people have, when they have them, and how these are expressed and experienced. Theory and logic suggests that people with higher emotional intelligence should use different processes to regulate emotions than those with low emotional intelligence. This research project will examine this idea using experience sampling (multiple in-the-moment surveys taken on smart phones in real time) and related methods.

This project examines differences in the emotion regulation strategies used by high versus low emotional intelligence individuals. Emotion regulation will be modelled as a process that occurs over time, using experience sampling methods (ESM).
