Understanding how leaves develop

Summary

Plants utilize "boundaries" of genes expression to help decide where to position and how to shape leaves. This project will investigate how these boundaries control plant development. It will utilize confocal microscopy and molecular genetics to investigate plant development in a dynamic manner.

Supervisor

Associate Professor Marcus Heisler.

Research location

School of Life and Environmental Sciences

Program type

PHD

Synopsis

During the formation of complex organisms some tissues play an important organizing role through long-range signalling. In plants, such an organizer is thought to control both leaf shape and position.

This project will investigate how the leaf organizer is formed and how it signals to surrounding tissues to control development.

The project will utilize confocal-based imaging and molecular genetics to perturb and analyse the role of different genes and signals.
