Many people who use alcohol and other drugs (AOD) have health concerns and are sometimes involved in the criminal justice system. It is therefore important to determine the best way for health and legal personnel to interact with potentially intoxicated people. The aim of this research project is to generate an understanding on if, and how people are able to accurately determine: whether someone is intoxicated, by what substances, and whether this intoxication could be life threatening and/or cause significant acute impairment. This research has the potential to impact a wide range of industries: preventing misdiagnosis and medication contraindications in health care, averting miscarriages of justice from erroneous testimony from AOD impaired witnesses and victims of crime, improving roadside AOD testing for driver impairment, promoting safer workplaces (e.g., construction), and avoiding violence and injury through enhancing responsible service of alcohol in the entertainment industry.
