Amino Acid Utilisation in Reduced Protein Diets


Chicken-meat is the dominant animal protein source in human diets in Australia.  This research will increase our future capacity to produce affordable, healthy chicken-meat with humane animal welfare by novel dietary formulations that simultaneously improve chicken growth performance whilst reducing feed ingredient costs.  Low-protein diets will decrease nitrogen and ammonia pollution of the environment, enhance bird welfare by reducing foot pad dermatitis and advantage flock health.  It will also reduce requirements for imported soybean meal from Brazil where soybean production represents a powerful threat to local tropical biodiversity.  Chicken-meat production generates less greenhouse gases than its competitors but this project will further reduce harmful environmental outputs and ensure food security for Australia.

This project intends to generate advanced knowledge in amino acid metabolism in poultry in order to reduce soybean inclusion in broiler diets via substitution with crystalline amino acids.  It uses advanced statistical modelling to predict optimal inclusions of various crystalline amino acids.  Students will gain knowledge in poutry husbandry, advanced experimental design, statistical analysis and academic writing.  Students will also have the opportunity to work closely with the inudstry which brings possibilities for future career development.
